Publisher Description

In this collection of new and recently published short fiction, Elmore Leonard demonstrates the superb characterizations, dead-on dialogue, vivid atmosphere, and driving plotting that have made him a household name. And once more this master of crime illustrates that the line between the law and the lawbreakers is not as firm as we might think.

Federal marshal Karen Sisco, from the best-selling novel Out of Sight, returns in Karen Makes Out, once again inadvertently mixing pleasure with business. In Fire in the Hole, Raylan Givens, last seen in Riding the Rap and Pronto, meets up with an old friend, but they're now on different sides of the law. In the title story, When the Women Come Out to Dance, Mrs. Mahmood gets more than she bargains for when she conspires with her maid to end her unhappy marriage. In all nine stories, each unique in their own right, reluctant heroes and laid-back lowlifes struggle for power, survival, and their fifteen minutes of fame.

Vivid, hilarious, and unfailingly human, these stories ring true with Elmore Leonard's signature deadpan social observations and diabolical eye for the foibles of the good guys and the bad.

"Well, I think it's a law or something that you have to like Elmore Leonard. I purchased this one for the one story "Fire in the Hole" A Raylan Givens story. That one was the best story in the book for me, but, there were some other gems in here as well. But, there was one or two that were only a few pages long and kind of left me scratching my head. But, over all if you like Elmore you'll want to add this one to your collection."

" If you like the TV show justified you'll enjoy this short work as it is essentially the pilot of the show. It's short but fun if your a fan. I was able to read the entire book in about 1.5 hours. Don't expect anything new or amazing, it only varies from the pilot in a couple minor details but still it's a great concept and a fun quick read, perfect for a car/plane ride. "

" I enjoyed the pace of these stories and the unusual plots that were just normal life yet bigger than life at the same time. Seemed to be a different style for this author and I hope he writes more like these fine stories. "

" I'll be honest, my review is basically for the title story. I've gotten into the show "Justified" recently, and was curious to see how accurate a depiction it was of the short story on which it was based. The answer? Incredibly accurate, right down to most of the dialogue. A very good read, and I'll definitely be checking out some of Leonard's other Raylan Givens stories "

" I didn't read all of the stories. I thought I'd like his style but it's hard for me to get into. It was worth checking out....part it of my disinterest might have had to do with all the literary fiction I was reading, which tainted my pallet. "

" Leonard's collection is thick with characters pulled from previous works, some that stay and talk a while, others that just pass through these short fictions. Nobody here overstays their welcome, which helps keep this anthology moving right along as it skips from crime fiction to western and back again. I came out of Justified curiosity for "Fire in the Hole," but stayed for the gripping title story and the equally good "The Tonto Woman." When the Women Come Out to Dance is a well-crafted, easy read that'll set your feet tapping, but isn't quite enough to get you out on the floor. "

" A series of short stories by the master of the dialogue and world view of those on the edge. I think Elmore Leonard's writing is best showcased with the novel rather than short story. Worth noting that the basis for the TV series produced by Leonard ( Justified ) appears in this collection. "
