Publisher Description

Sometimes it's tough to be Lucy O'Rourke. Disasters of all sorts seem to seek out this globe-trotting photographer. Whether it's on a raft in Cataract Canyon, a crocodile attack on the Amazon, a hurricane in the Gulf Stream or even the two-legged kind (men), Lucy just can't seem to help making the wrong choice at precisely the wrong moment. This collection of eleven linked stories features the unique blending of romance and adventure that is the trademark of Pam Houston.

"I loved this book.... It was published in 1998 but I've only just come across it. A series of linked short stories that read like a novel. The writing makes you eat up every word and the characters are so real you know you know them. I'll be looking out for more work by Pam Houston. Two minor downsides that hardly detract. One is that sometimes - hardly ever - a phrase will be overlush and the other is that I when I read a book of short stories I'm looking for short stories - each one different from the other - and not an almost novel."

" Interesting read for book club.. In general I liked it, I liked the stories. I wished one of the stories was lengthened to make the book, instead of half the book being many little stories only connected by the characters and water/adventure. And the other half was more of a formal story. I guess I might be to critical of it, but I really wished the book consisted of one story instead of many little somewhat interconnected stories. "

" I saw Pam Houston read from this book when I lived in San Francisco and her voice just captured what it was like to be a single woman living on her own, trying to make it all make sense. She is a dear old friend to me now. "

" thank you ocean state job lot!! what a treasure this book is. Will read again and again. Love the voice of the main character lucille, love the snapshots of her life that make up each short story and which, woven together, let me see, relate to and love her life tapesty. This is me, this is my friend, this is us :) "

" Collections of short stories are always difficult to rate... I usually end up loving one or two (like the title story) and then not caring for the others. The endings to many of these stories were disappointing, and I was left wondering what the author's point was. I might have liked this book more if I had read it a decade ago, as I had trouble relating to the narrator (the stories are all related). Still, the adventure stories (whitewater rafting, sailing in storm, etc) were exciting, and I liked the book better toward the end. "

" This is really book of short stories about a woman and her uncanny ability to always pick the wrong man to become involved with. I thought the writing was beautiful and insightful although I liked some of the stories better than others. "

" Pam Houston is a decent writer and easy in the saddle when it comes to fleshing out her protagonist's inner life, but if I had to read one more of her harrowing! near-death! adventure! pieces, this book would have been left on the bus. "

" This was a fun book. Not as good as sighthound, and better than my weakness...the chapters felt a lot like short stories so it was a good one since I don't have a lot of time to fun read right now. "

" Even though I don't think I like as many of the stories as much as I liked almost all the stories in "Cowboys Are My Weakness", this still contains moments of sheer happiness for the reader. And the first story is one of my favorite short stories ever, and kind of sums up a lot of her work for me. "
