Plot Summary

Diana Gabaldon's Voyager is a New York Times bestseller and the third book in her bestselling Outlander series. Gabaldon uses her superior writing skills to weave historical details into this beautifully told love story, giving it life and depth. Her characters are strong, intelligent, and brave, and their story is one that ensnares you throughout the novel.

Voyager continues the story of Claire, the time-traveling doctor from the 20th century, and Jamie, her Scottish husband from the 1700s. It's been 20 years since the Jamie sent Claire back to her own time, pregnant and alone, while he went off to die defending Culloden. Claire never thought she'd see Jamie again, or that their daughter would know her father, but news comes that changes everything.

After all this time, Claire has discovered that Jamie did not die in the massacre and is in fact still alive. The revelation forces her to make a hard choice, leave her and Jamie's daughter in the present to travel back in time and find Jamie, or let him go. Claire isn't even sure that Jamie still loves her, and the long, strenuous years have been hard on both of them. Has their love survived it? Will he forgive her for being gone so long?

Diana Gabaldon is an American author best known for her Outlander series. Born and raised in Arizona, she is part English, part Mexican-American, and has been writing novels since 1988. Before taking up writing, Gabaldon earned a Bachelor of Science in Zoology from Northern Arizona University in the early 1970s.

After receiving her bachelors degree, she continued her education obtaining a Master of Science in Marine Biology from the University of California, and a PhD from Northern Arizona University in Ecology. She worked as a faculty member at Arizona State University, but resigned after her first book deal. She currently lives with her husband in Arizona and has three grown children.

"Ok, so it was very obvious when I reread this that I had swine flu when I read this the first time, because there were huge chunks that I did not remember at ALL and I am going to blame it on the fever. Anyway, I love Voyager SO MUCH. I mean, come on, reunions are great, especially when the couple being reunited are crossing centuries to do it. Not gonna lie, I cried a little when Claire came back. This is probably my favorite Outlander book, I think, because it's kind of the beginning of everything that gets explored later in the series. For example, I completely forgot that John was the kid whose arm got broken in Dragonfly in Amber. I knew they went way back, but not THAT far back. I thought that whole bit started at Ardsmuir. And Young Ian is introduced too, and he's just such a wonderful character. *sigh* There's too much love for this book (and series) to contain it in a review. So yea, I loved it a lot and if you're reading this to decide if you should read Voyager, DO IT! But go back to Outlander and Dragonfly In Amber first, no matter what Diana's website says about the stand-alone ability of each book."

Publisher Summary

Diana Gabaldon's magnificent historical saga, begun with Outlander and Dragonfly in Amber, continues with this New York Times bestseller. Set in the intriguing Scotland of 200 years ago, the third installment in the romantic adventures of Jamie and Claire is as compelling as the first. Now that Claire knows Jamie survived the slaughter at Culloden, she is faced with the most difficult decision of her life. She aches to travel back through time again to find the love of her life, but, in order to do that, she must leave their daughter behind. It has been 20 years since she and Jamie were forced to separate. Can she risk everything, maybe even her life, on a gamble that their love has withstood the long, rigorous test of time? Diana Gabaldon's powerful, witty, and heroic characters lend themselves well to the rich, melodic narration accorded them by Davina Porter. Under her spell, listeners find themselves transported back through time to exciting faraway places alive with people they would enjoy knowing.

" This is probably one of my favorite Outlander Stories. I love the characters so much, you can't help but love them. I have listened to all the books. In my opinion that is the best way to enjoy these amazing novels. The narrator is THE BEST! It is such a great way to escape into Jamie and Claire's world. I tried reading them and it wrecked my life because I couldn't put them down. Listening is the way to go because I can still get stuff done while listening to my favorite story. "

" Having seen the TV Series of Diana Gabaldon's Outlander Books 1 & 2, I had to continue this wonderful saga with her Book 3 – Voyager. I love the way Diana's Scottish/ C18th English/Colonial American humour, intrigue, pathos & empathy is brought to life in Davina's audio performance. I find the story enthralling & enchanting as Diana's web-like connections both within & between Chapters, Sections & Books both fill-out & surprise me from the Plot Summaries that I have already read of all the Books (up to No. 8). This confirmed my decision of how much I needed to get these audiobooks in order to find some approximation of the TV Series' version of Book 1 & 2. I both can't wait & dearly hope that the visualisations of Books 3-8 will encompass the settings, characters, actions & emotions revealed in the audiobooks in their TV series that drew me in so inextricably with the first 2 Books' TV series. Voyager brought me back to many of the things that I loved in Outlander and moved the plot and characters lovingly forward with humor and adventure and respect that they deserve. Two Thumbs Up!! "

" I wouldn't say I'm getting tired of the series, exactly, but the novelty is wearing off a bit. I still enjoyed it very much, though. Voyager strays a bit further from the original premise--there's much more magic in this book, and also a serial killer and some Pirates of the Caribbean. Despite being set 20 years after Dragonfly in Amber, very few of the characters' personalities have grown or changed at all (only one changed a lot). While I understand that the author doesn't want to meddle with much-loved characters, it just seemed strange to me. "
