" I have a real problem rating some books that I appreciate without necessarily enjoying. Villette falls into this category. Bronte makes good and innovative use of a heroine, who, in suppressing her feelings, becomes an unreliable narrator. As a character study of determination in the face of loneliness and disappointment the novel works; as a description of the vulnerability of a single working woman in a nineteenth century foreign environment, it is without doubt, very accurate. As a well-structured dramatic novel with engaging characters and interesting plot, it falls down in my eyes. "
