Publisher Description

The island of Mistmantle is inhabited by red squirrels, otters, hedgehogs, and moles and ruled from Mistmantle tower by a hedgehog king. Urchin is an orphan squirrel who was found abandoned soon after birth on one of the island's beaches and was raised by other animals. On leaving school, he is employed at court as a page by the dashing Captain Crispin. Mistmantle has always been a free society, but under the influences of a squirrel Captain called Husk, the King is enforcing harsh new laws and the animals are becoming enslaved. Using the traditional system of drawing tokens to establish a person's guilt, Crispin is accused of a terrible murder and is banished from the island. Urchin becomes caught up in the struggle to restore justice and freedom to Mistmantle, to overthrow Husk, and return Crispin to the island.

"This book was great! When I first saw it, I thought it would be a knock-off of the Redwall series but it was really original. It had a sweet (I don't mean cool, I mean sweet) and presenting-the-facts style to it and though it was a little obvious that Lord Husk and Lady Aspen were the bad guys right from the start (this thing does a spoiler alert on its own right?) it did a terrific job of making them seem innocent at first. It was surprising too, in small ways as well as the big ones and, though you can anticipate some of the plot twists, they still shock you just as much as if you hadn't expected it. Soooooo great!"

" It was okay. I think it was written for a younger audience such as 3-4th grade. A bit simplistic in it's plot. "

" Reading this to my boys - much easier for them to follow the characters than the Redwall series. We started reading those, and love how rich the language is, but there are so many characters and types of animals you need a profile of the cast to follow it. This series is easier on the ear and still is entertaining and keeps their attention. "
