Publisher Description

For fans of the Chronicles of Narnia comes the second book in the Wildwood Chronicles, the New York Times bestselling fantasy adventure series by Colin Meloy, lead singer of the Decemberists.

The three books in the Wildwood Chronicles captivate readers with the wonder and thrill of a secret world within the landscape of a modern city. The books feel at once firmly steeped in the classics of children's literature and completely fresh.

In Under Wildwood, Colin Meloy reveals new dimensions of the epic fantasy-adventure series begun with the critically acclaimed, bestselling Wildwood.

Ever since Prue McKeel returned home from the Impassable Wilderness after rescuing her brother from the malevolent Dowager Governess, life has been pretty dull. School holds no interest for her, and her new science teacher keeps getting on her case about her dismal test scores and daydreaming in class. Her mind is constantly returning to the verdant groves and sky-tall trees of Wildwood, where her friend Curtis still remains as a bandit-in-training.

But all is not well in that world. Dark assassins with mysterious motives conspire to settle the scores of an unknown client. A titan of industry employs inmates from his orphanage to work his machine shop, all the while obsessing over the exploitation of the Impassable Wilderness. And, in what will be their greatest challenge yet, Prue and Curtis are thrown together again to save themselves and the lives of their friends, and to bring unity to a divided country. But in order to do that, they must go under Wildwood.

The bestselling trilogy from Colin Meloy consists of Wildwood, Under Wildwood, and Wildwood Imperium.

"The second book in the Wildwood series takes the main characters, Prue and Curtis, underground in what turns out to be a labrynth of tunnels beneath Wildwood that connect to the outside world as well. The author rounds out many of the characters in this sequel and he fills in the back story of the first book nicely. I loved the addition of Curtis' sisters and the orphanage characters. The author clarifies how the Wildwood magic works a bit more and there are lots of great chase scenes. Fans of the first book will love this one as well and look forward to the third installment."

  • “Droll and ornate, elegiac and romantic…Meloy mulches his verdant wilderness with wildly eclectic cultural references.”

" Prue McKeel is bored in school, but becomes the target of a deadly assassin. She is rescued by her friends Curtis (and Septimus the rat), and returns to the Impassable Wilderness. Once there, she and her friends are charged with reanimating the dead son of the DOwager Governess again to save the inhabitants. To succeed, they seek out the two collaborators, who had previously succeeded. Meanwhile, Curtis's sisters Rachel and Elsie are left at the local orphanage by their parents who are looking for Curtis. Nice illustrations are more than offset by the book's completely open ending, where nothing was resolved. "

" Okay -- I need to be honest here. This is one of very few times that I haven't actually finished a book. I love the illustratons -- I love Meloy's songs with The Decemberists -- I actually love his word choice. Wildwood was difficult to get through -- Under Wildwood was impossible for me. I really wanted to like it. "

" What an enjoyable book to read. Despite the fact that I haven't read the first book, "Wildwood", following the journeys of Prue & Curtis and Elsie & Rachel was fun and interesting. I really enjoyed the inhabitants of the Wildwood and how the story wove between the two "realities". I look forward to reading the next book to find out how the journey continues. "

About Colin Meloy

Colin Meloy once wrote Ray Bradbury a letter, informing him that he “considered himself an author too,” when he was ten. Since then, he has gone on to be the singer and songwriter for the band the Decemberists, where he channels all of his weird ideas into weird songs. With the Wildwood Chronicles, he now channels those ideas into novels. He lives in Portland, Oregon, with his family.
