It is True Dickinson's 43rd birthday, and her best friends have gathered on this snowy night in Cape Cod at a trendy neighborhood restaurant to celebrate. True has never felt more alone.

It's been eight years since the death of her husband, leaving her to raise their son on her own. Both her son and her small business are thriving, and True's life is full. Coming up on 43 makes True realize that there is an empty space in her life that friends and family cannot fill. She feels her youth and beauty slipping away, and the possibility for romance has never seemed more remote.

But everything changes the moment True and her beloved assistant, Isabelle, slide into a snow-filled ditch on the drive home. Saved by a young man she met earlier at the restaurant, True comes face to face with the opportunity to let love back into her life, that is, if she can overcome her own fears, and if these two spirits can find a way to tame each other's wild hearts and curb each other's supremely independent natures. " I had a tough time getting into this book, but stuck it out and ended up finding elements that were good - it became interesting to see how the characters began to explore their inner depths and the impact that had on their relationships. I felt like at times the author had too much going on in the story, but it came to a satisfactory end. "

" Horrible. I threw it away after a few chapters. Crude language, gratuitous sex, and junky writing. I expected better from JM. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Carol | 1/28/2014

" I wish I could give this 2 1/2 stars. I did not dislike the book, it was quite readable. And I read through to the end, if only to see if True could lighten up. This story has a bit of everything - widows, love, the strange way older men choosing younger women is fine but a woman and a man ten years younger is ridiculous, there are business up-and-downs, grandparents abound, a good kid who cannot understand adults, a high-risk pregnancy, etc. etc. Actually as a beach read this would get 3 1/2 stars since my beach reads don't have be as compelling or full of substance, more like reading lite. I suppose I keep wishing I'd find another book of hers I liked as much as "The Deep End of the Ocean" which is probably not fair to the book. "

  • 1 out of 51 out of 51 out of 51 out of 51 out of 5 Meg | 1/11/2014

" boring... predictable...characters were less than expected. I usually really like Mitchard's work. but this was SOOOOO a middle-aged-women down on her luck looking for romance book it was pathetic... "

  • 1 out of 51 out of 51 out of 51 out of 51 out of 5 Linda | 1/9/2014

" This one was difficult to get through--I've liked other books by the author, but this one was exhausting! (Could one character have been a listener instead of a talker?) "

  • 1 out of 51 out of 51 out of 51 out of 51 out of 5 Kim | 1/7/2014

" The books portrayal of a forty-something women was degrading and stereo typical. An accomplished women can never be truly accomplished when lacking a man. The theme is tiring and dad. The book was filled with self centered and spiteful characters. Top it off with bringing a baby in to their mess. A disappointment for an accomplished writer. "

  • 1 out of 51 out of 51 out of 51 out of 51 out of 5 Sarah Williams | 9/17/2011

" A forty something woman who meets and falls in love with a younger man. To me the whole book focused on True and her whining about everything in her life. Sort of depressing and I didn't enjoy the storyline or the characters. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Joni | 8/17/2011

" For all of us over 40 somethings and over size 8s, a story where the main character isn't gorgeous but still gets the younger, handsome guy. But as in real life, it isn't that easy. This book is a realistic look at relationships between couples as well as parents and children. "
