Publisher Description

Kelsey Byden grew up believing her mother had died when she was three. Now at twenty-six and freshly divorced, she receives a letter from her mother explaining that she is alive and living on a Virginia horse farm. Deeply strung by lies told to protect her, Kelsey takes her anger out at her college professor father by going to visit her mother, who Kelsey learns spent over ten years in prison for murder. But there are more secrets to be found out and Kelsey decides to stay at her mother's splendid horse farm where she falls in love with horses and the man next door, handsome gambler Gabe Slater. When murdered men and injured horses turn up, Kelsey finds evil lurking where she least expects it, and risks all to restore her mother's honor.

"Wow this book reminded me so much of NR's "in death" series. The banter of the main characters Kelsey and Gabe was so like Eve and Roarke I kept giving Gabe an irish accent in my mind! Really good mystery and fun romance--excellent choice for a holiday weekend read."

" I will never understand the lengths some people will go to too protect a name or families reputation. To rip apart the lives of an innocent woman destroy a child and not even accept basic responsibility for your actions is horrible and disgusting. "

" I'm a sucker for stories set in the world of racehorses, or horses in general, so True Betrayals had an advantage going in. That said, I wasn't overly impressed with the book. Part of that was that the pacing which, especially in the first half, was slow. The reader gets introduced to all the players but not a whole lot else happens. Secondly, it took me a while to warm up the Kelsey. I didn't dislike her, and was even sympathetic, but she's a very reserved individual and it comes across. Perhaps that's more a testament to Ms. Roberts writing than a flaw, however. I liked the main characters, and the mystery was solid. Some of the "bad guys" are stereotypically bad, but others are not. Overall it was a good, solid effort, but somehow lacking the fire of some of Roberts other romantic suspense novels like Carnal Innocence, or the really fine suspense plotting of books like High Noon. " Sometimes your life is not what you think it is. What if on the day your divorce is final you receive a letter from your mother. Not unusual, except you have been lead to believe she died when you were 3. So begins this romance by Nora Roberts set in Kentucky horse country. "

" Listened to the audio cassette version in order to check for reported damage to library copy- it played just fine (patron probably needed new batteries in their player-grumble, grumble.) The setting in the world of thoroughbred racing had lots of color and showed that Roberts is comfortable in the horse world so that was OK but otherwise I found it far too long and drawn-out a story. . .really dragged for me. This was my first (and probably only) sampling of the unfathomably popular Roberts. Having said that I will admit that I do enjoy the J.D.Robb books! Go figure. "

" I would say I liked the beginning of the book very much, but by the middle I could tell that it was going to end the same way as the rest of Nora's books. Not that that's a bad thing, who doesn't love a happy ending? "

" I love how Nora can bring you into any world. I could practically smell the horses and the dirt. And I could "feel" Kelsey's pain, anger, frustration. I believe I even vocalized it some. My husband asked often while I read this, "What did she do now?" "

" I have read 3 books from this author and this was my favourite. The romance was better in this book than the others and there were family betrayals spanning 2 generations which made it more interesting. The setting was in a racing horse stud. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and read it a second time. "
