Publisher Description

The Extravaganza of the Seas is a five-thousand-ton cash cow, a top-heavy tub whose sole function is to carry gamblers three miles from the Florida coast, take their money, then bring them back so they can find more money. In the middle of a tropical storm one night, these characters are among the passengers it carries: Fay Benton, a single mom and cocktail waitress desperate for something to go right for once; Johnny and the Contusions, a ship’s band with so little talent they are…well, the ship’s band; Arnold and Phil, two refugees from the Beaux Arts Senior Center; Lou Tarant, a wide, bald man who has killed nine people, though none recently; and an assortment of uglies whose job it is to facilitate the ship’s true business, which is money-laundering or drug-smuggling or…something.

"I loved to read Dave Barry's newspaper columns when I was a kid, he is one of my favorite humorous authors. When I found out that he had written a fiction novel, Big Trouble, I read it and loved it. It was made into a movie, which is also one of my favorites. I looked him up recently to see if he had any other books and found this one. I liked this book as much as Big Trouble. It follows the same sort of pattern with the "main" character being a sort of flawed but likable guy who stumbles into other characters carrying out criminal activities, during which he meets and falls in love with a female character as everyone tries to sort out and remove themselves from various dangerous situations and inadvertently foil the criminal plot. I love these kind of movies too, where multiple story lines are introduced and one by one become entangled with each other. And since it's Dave Barry, as each interaction between story lines occurs, hilarity ensues."

" I think it was awesome. Like his others, everything escalates. And hilarity ensues. The whole book is one evening aboard the gambling cruise ship Extravaganza of the Seas. There's something else going on involving a certain organized crime association. You'll be sad even when the bad guys get theirs! "

" This is great to listen to on audio on a road trip. The characters were well developed, and great disclaimer at the beginning to warn readers about the language, but the bad language is of course used by bad people! One scene was so funny it made my sides hurt. I don't know the name of the person who recorded it on audio, but he did such an amazing job with the voices, creating a very distinct character. The female voices were very believable, too. Again, this was a great road trip book. "

" I enjoyed this read. I did laugh out loud many times. I was especially fond of the old folks making a "jail break" from their nursing home to spend a night gambling on a casino boat in the middle of a hurricane. My second favorite part of this book is the news handling of the tropical storm as they send team after team to cover the first fatality of the storm only to get killed themselves. I guess if you haven't got much news to cover you might as well make your own. It was absolutely hilarious that the death toll of nine for the storm consisted entirely of crew members from News 9. Priceless. The book overall was much more violent than I had expected; but even this violence somehow manages to be funny as every single character is completely inept. And of course the hero turns out to be a mini skirt wearing coast guard agent. Did anyone else think that was hilarious? "

The story was really interesting and definitely held my attention, but I was a little disappointed with some of the content. Too much sex and profanity for me to want to give it any more than 3 stars. Or ever read again. "
