Young Jim Hawkins lives a quiet life as the son of an innkeeper. This all changes when an ancient sailor takes up lodging at the inn. Jim is both horrified and fascinated by the captain’s bloody stories. But when the old man dies without paying his bill, Jim must search the sailor’s one possession, a large sea chest, for payment. In doing so, he unknowingly pockets an old map from the chest. But Jim is not the only one interested in the sea chest, and he has to flee when a group of cutthroats shows up to ransack the few possessions of the old sailor.

The family doctor recognizes the map as the key to a fortune, which commences a Caribbean treasure hunt. With the pirates only steps behind, Jim races to reach Treasure Island. Seventeen set sail, but how many will return? Complete with peg-legs, parrots, pieces-of-eight, and the original Long John Silver, this novel launched Stevenson on his long and fascinating writing career and marked the beginning of the pirate genre.

" I think I will need to reread this eventually. While the audiobook was beautifully produced and performed, I don't feel I got the entire experience of the story seeing as I tend to space out when riding my bike. "

" I guess this book was just not what I was expecting. I thought it was going to be an elaborate treasure-hunt with an interesting cast of characters, but it was basically just pirates shooting each other. Long John Silver was really the only interesting character - the narrator, Jim Hawkins, didn't seem to change or really learn anything despite his strange adventure. Also, Stevenson used sailing terms constantly throughout the book, which I suppose made it accurate but were very difficult to get through. His prose just didn't bring the excitement or suspense that I expected. "

" I reread this book after long time; and this time the unabridged version.. the story creates a magic with its super detail character paint outs... and Jim cptn Flint anf Billy are just unforgettable... A must reaad for all kids who love pirates, sea adventure and stuff "

" Of course, I read this years ago, but I just finished reading it to my class of third graders. May have been a little much for them (vocabulary), but reading it out loud was an amazing experience. And discussing it each day with young readers was awesome. We speculated, argued, and loved every chapter. Great book for sharing. "

" I should have read this classic long before now, but am glad to put on a different shelf in my library. Great story, good pace, great surprises. Vocabulary was very fitting for the story, but would be difficult for a younger reader. I am kind of surprised it is such a classic for younger people. "

" I read this book for school, so naturally I probably would have found it a bit more exciting if I had gotten to read it on my own, but somehow I still think that I wouldn't have found it very amazing. It was definitely interesting, though I think Jim was a bit of an idiot. Thanks goodness he had Dr. Livesey and Ben Gunn to help out. I mean really, this kid does not think through his actions. Also in this book I found that I couldn't really distinguish a favorite character, because they all disappointed me and at one time or another. So I've decided to simply say that they all could have done better. It was some really great writing though, I will say that. "

" An adventure tale that can send anyone back to their childhood days of wanting to seek adventure away from home. Beautifully crafted and far more satisfying a story on the page than sitting and watching it distilled down to two hours for the screen - yes even more so than watching Muppet Treasure Island. "

" I grew up on the 50s cinema version of this tale and remember loving it as a kid. In preparation for my sailing expedition, I thought I would revisit and actually read the tale. I thought it was excellent! An adventure and then some, I was inspired to check out Flint and Silver, which I didn't even finish chapter one of. Oh well. "

" A great book for a rainy vacation day...for any day, really. I always remember Henry Fonda forcing that kid to read in the movie On Golden Pond. The kid first protests, then becomes quickly engrossed in the story. I loved that little detail and vowed to read this book one day. Now that I finally got around to it, I see Henry Fonda was right. " I should have read this book years ago. I feel like it is one of those books where the back cover summary doesn't quite reveal what actually happens and the reader thinks the book will go in another direction entirely. Anyone could have written this book, but not with the same voice or skill as Stevenson. I will be reading other books by this author. "

" The original "Pirates of the Caribbean." It is easy to understand our fascination of pirate movies after reading this classic. Unfortunately, movies are never as good as the book. And, contemporary stories are never as good as the classics. Save your time. Follow the adventures of Jim Hawkins and read this book. "

" This is by far the best pirate story I have heard or seen. To me, it blows Pirates of the Carribean out of the water! Alot of the action in Pirates of the Carribean is based on this book. Honestly, I admire these creators of these adventure stories rather than the ones that add on to it's genius that makes a story great. "

" I decided to read this because I never have and it's a classic, right? One of the last books I read referred to it (The Wednesday Wars) so I got curious and seeing as how I could get it free on my Kindle . . . why not? I enjoyed it and it was a pretty quick read. Never knew this was where Long John Silver came from! I can see how boys would love the story what with the whole buried treasure and pirate thing going on, although keeping up with all the shipping terminology could be a hindrance. I never have been able to get all those terms straight in my mind - but even in such ignorance boys will still love all the adventure and action. "

" A book that had been on my 'to-do' list for a while I finally started with so much excitement, ready to be pulled into a swashbuckling adventure! I must admit I was a little disappointed at first; A little slow to get into the action and the language obviously reflecting that of the time set, it doesn't pull you in the way we're so use to with all these pirate film these days...but stick with it! As the adventure unravels you learn to love the language and the story gets pretty exciting! By the end I couldn't put it down and really enjoyed my time on treasure Island. "

" I've read a few older novels and have had a lot of difficulty getting into them, not so with this one. Vivid description and well- drawn characters make for as good a read now as this book has always been. I'm struck by the character of Long John, and how no one really knows whose side he's really on, kinda reminds me of Cap'n Jack from the first Pirates of the Caribbean film. "

" Robert Louis Stevenson's wonderful novel is a thrill ride, an epic delight! Jimmy Hawkins' adventure is one for the ages. One that both young and old, men and women will envy for generations to come. After reading the Perfect Storm, I decided to finish this book. I had started reading it about a few months ago and decided to put it on an indefinite hiatus because of some school work. I had forgotten about it and only thought of the Hispaniola because of the Andrea Gail. How stupid of me to forget such a fine piece of literature. Treasure Island, as most people believe, is said to be a young adults book. I would like to disagree. Yes, the protagonist is a young man but I believe that this work is written for anyone wanting to revive their spirit of adventure, no matter what age or gender. Only that, young men are the most drawn to it because they have the highest appreciation for adventure that the old and some women lack. Coming to story, there never is a dull moment and it unfolds in a spirit-y kind of way that never gets cliche or predictable. It has an air of freshness in it that you can almost smell the seas as you read this book. It is written in the first person mostly from Jim's account though there is a part from the Doctor. The tone emits a subtle jolliness in a kind of way that young men do when they tell stories, which is one of the things that makes this attractive. Another thing I loved, is that the spelling were suited to fit the accent of the pirates. It always enhances the literature when that is done. I got a good laugh at the "sperrits" part and the "spil'd yer Bible". I loved the story. No need to say much about it. No spoilers but one: I also absolutely loved the fact that John Silver didn't die and escaped. Kinda got a soft spot for the ole' Barbecue. The ending was quite nice. It detailed the lives of some of the crew like the Captain, Gray, and Benn Gunn. I laughed quite hard at the "one of the notable singers in church" part. Which reminds me, the humor is also one to look out for. Stevenson sprays it at places you don't expect. I might even think that Riordan was heavily influenced by Stevenson's coy humor. Getting back on the ending. I was also left quite hanging on what happened to young Jim, the Doctor, and the Squire Trelawney. Well, I guess Stevenson leaves it to the reader's imagination. I'd like to think that Jim turned out to be a good, respected, well-to-do man. Had a nice family and lived a long and happy life. Treasure Island is a tale of pirates and gold. But, it's also a coming-of-age tale that redefines the meaning of Treasure. I sincerely believe that the Treasure is not the gold, it's only but a mere bonus, that the real Treasure is the adventure in itself. The memories, the friendships developed, and both the horrific and wonderful experiences that young Jim will always keep, that is the real Treasure. "

I never knew it but this book is basically the foundation for all the pirate-hunting-for-treasure scenarios you see today on TV and in movies. This is an iconic adventure book that started it all and i would highly reccomend reading it to anyone l;ooking for a good read. "

" I really had a good time with this. It sure helped that I am familiar with a dew of the adaptations so the charicatures were so clear to me. But interesting to see the dramatic license taken in some plot points. A little bit more gruesome and violent in the book. "

I was delighted by this swashbuckling adventure, telling the story of Long John Silver and the boy who outsmarted him. I can see why this book is a treasure. "

" A wonderful adventure from start to finish, but I felt like the excitement meter was lacking slightly. I managed to finish it, due to the fact that I owed credit for it being a classic and all. Other then the fact that it can droll on at times, the pirate speak is not for the slower readers like me. Although these pirates maintain an extensive vocabulary (which is a good thing), I felt myself at times, going over a sentence three to four times over just to understand the message. If you're one of those "old literature" types, you've come to the right place. The tale of Jim Hawkins is certainly an eye-opener, and it wasn't easy to just bookmark it and leave. Fans of the animated Disney movie, this is where it all began. "

" Any well written book about pirates is great but this one is special in its well developed plot (some pirate books are more about scurvy and riff raff carousing in ports than anything else.) "

" A book of brisk (but vivid) language and speedy pace (quite surprising for the time it was written), it packs a whole lot of adventures within its 200+ pages. The most amazing thing about it is that it engrossed me both as a child and as an adult. "

" It was a good book but there were a lot of confusing parts for me. Also the narrator never said what oaths the people said, butI think that was a good decision which is why I give the book three stars. My favorite part was when Jim fought a person whose last name was Hands and he died in the fight. "

" Interesting as a first person account. Kind of felt rushed at the end, though it is the oldest book I've read in which the author gives a bit of information about what happens to the characters after the story ends. I like this in movies, and it was fun to find it in this book. "

" Hard to read with my 8-yr old but somehow he paid attention - worth it if your kid loves pirates and you have a good pirate voice. Have a glass if rum handy about midway through the book - finally, we did a free audio book version for last 1/3 of the book. "
