Publisher Description

Set in the eighteenth century, Treasure Island spins a heady tale of piracy, a mysterious treasure map, and a host of sinister characters charged with diabolical intentions. Seen through the eyes of Jim Hawkins, the cabin boy of the Hispaniola, the action-packed adventure tells of a perilous sea journey across the Spanish Main, a mutiny led by the infamous Long John Silver, and a lethal scramble for buried treasure on an exotic isle.

Rich in atmosphere and character, Treasure Island continues to mesmerize readers with its perceptive views of the changing nature of human motives.

"Treasure Island is undoubtedly great, for its originality, master storytelling and incredibly fascinating adventures which make you bite your nails till the whole thing is over. Of course, if you really love to read about sea adventures, bloodthirsty pirates and quest for treasure, simply, you have to read this; and I must say that I was not the least sorry for reserving my time for this masterpiece, page turner, or anything you could call it. I usually condemn telling somebody the plot or what happens in a story in advance before he/she reads it. Being told, I hate equally, since it just damages the astonishment and the suspense a reader should get from the book. So I will just say, "There should not be an avid reader of adventure who has never read Treasure Island. Read it. You'll love it."

" A fun historical sea romp, especially as an audiobook with all the "Shiver me timbers" and "arrgghh" piratey vocalizations performed to perfection by David Case. Now, on to "Silver," the recently-written followup that occurs 20 years following the original 1883 story. Heigh ho, mateys! "

" This book was pretty good. It was a good storyline but the literature was a bit old fashioned. I did like how they got to go to an island and look for treasure that a pirate had hid there. Some people who appreciate older literature might appreciate this book more than I did. "

" My first time reading this classic, and it was definitely a fun one. Jim Hawkins is living a normal life at his family's inn when an unusual stranger with a gruesome scar across his face comes to stay. So begins an incredible adventure, where Jim must come into his manhood amongst blood thirsty pirates and a fight for buried treasure. Even today, Stevenson's narration reads easy and fast, with action from the beginning to the end. It would've been nice to have a little more knowledge of boats (constant references to a ship's parts went over my head), but the Barnes and Noble classic version I read did a nice job of "translating" old slang and even seamen's references in the footnotes. Good read at the end of the summer! "

" I decided to read this because I never have and it's a classic, right? One of the last books I read referred to it (The Wednesday Wars) so I got curious and seeing as how I could get it free on my Kindle . . . why not? I enjoyed it and it was a pretty quick read. Never knew this was where Long John Silver came from! I can see how boys would love the story what with the whole buried treasure and pirate thing going on, although keeping up with all the shipping terminology could be a hindrance. I never have been able to get all those terms straight in my mind - but even in such ignorance boys will still love all the adventure and action. "

" I read most of this to my son (he wanted to watch the movie and we have a rule in our house that you have to read the book before the movie). It's still on the Grade 8 reading list for school, although my son got lost in all the ship language and pirate talk. I'm sure Treasure Island paved the way for all the "talk like a pirate" movements. With a lot of "Huzzah!" and "Avast!" uttered from his lips, Long John Silver still remains one of the most fascinating and larger-than-life characters in fiction. And yes, after a fresh reading, like a child I still want to run out to my backyard, strike the Jolly Roger, and start digging in the gardens for treasures un-told. "

" Because I know the plot and deeper meaning of this canonical novel, I always thought I had read it. I decided to read it again before starting on Andrew Motion's "Silver" a sort of sequel to "Treasure Island." But when Jim begins to be attracted to and repelled by John Silver, I realized this was my first time reading it. It's a cracking yarn, but what is really absorbing about it, is the characterization, subtle and shifting, nobody is one-dimensional. Robert Louis Stephenson's pirate novel deserves its place in literature. "

" A fine little book of maritime adventure, Treasure Island is a book I felt I needed to read. I liked the writing and the narration was superb. A charming little listen. "
