In Sawgamet, a north woods boomtown gone bust, the cold of winter breaks the glass of the schoolhouse thermometer, and the dangers of working in the cuts are overshadowed by the mysteries and magic lurking in the woods. Stephen, a pastor, is at home on the eve of his mother’s funeral, thirty years after the mythic summer his grandfather returned to the town in search of his beloved but long-dead wife. And like his grandfather, Stephen is forced to confront the losses of his past.

Touch introduces you to a world where monsters and witches oppose singing dogs and golden caribou, where the living and the dead part and meet again in the crippling beauty of winter and the surreal haze of summer.

Quotes & Awards

  • “Zentner’s luminous prose successfully conjures magical realism in the wilderness of northern Canada, at once evoking a harsh and unforgiving environment while spinning a soul-stirring tale about loss, love, and the power of believing in miracles. With its seamless blending of the natural and supernatural that is reminiscent of South American writers Borges and García Márquez, Touch is storytelling at its spellbinding best.”

    Barnes & Noble Review

  • “A lovely debut, at once dreamy and riveting, like a heavy snowfall watched from a vantage point safe indoors, besides a blazing fire.”

    Washington Post

  • “In this often-haunting debut, fire and ice, light and shadow, death and resurrection intersect…Here the wilderness, of the woods as well as the soul, is a place with which to be reckoned, and the strongest of men and women can fashion from it a life of mythological proportion and beauty.”

    Minneapolis Star-Tribune

  • Finalist for the 2011 Flaherty-Dunnan First Novel Prize
  • Nominated for the Barnes & Noble Discover Award
  • A 2011 Governor General’s Literary Award Finalist
  • Longlisted for the 2011 Scotiabank Giller Prize
  • Longlisted for the 2013 International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award

" It was interesting. A new world filled with new special abilities with people, and institutions in which they are detained. It is impossible to escape ,but Kyle manages. After he meets Deznee, the girls life life irrevocably changed. A lot of action, intrigue, love. "

" I really couldn't get into this book at all. There was no plot development, just run here, fight (and the action was pretty unbelievable too), touch each other, run there, fight some more and kiss some more. They'd get a contact's name from someone, find them, get another name just before that person was killed, then run somewhere else. And in between all of these fighting and dying scenes, they'd "touch" each other and make out. I'm not opposed to romance, in fact I really like it, but c'mon I need a real story for it to fit into. There was no character development either. I didn't like Dez much from the very beginning, so it was hard to root for her. And as the story progressed I never warmed up to her. In all fairness, I only read about half of the book and then I gave up. If I had finished it I might have found some redeeming qualities. "

" I'm not even close to being done this book and I fear the last chapter! I absolutely love these characters! who doesn't love a kick ass leading lady and a very hot but yet deadly side kick as Kale? From what I've read so far I know I'll be adding this series to my top 10 list of favorites! "

" It was a good book, but it's for a younger audience. As I was reading it, I kept thinking if I were a bit younger I would have loved it. As it is, it has an interesting plot, the obligatory hot guy, and a female protagonist that doesn't suck. I'd reccomend it to anyone ages 10-16 "
