James Bond is in disgrace. His medical report is critical of the high living that is ruining his health, so M packs him off for a fortnight to a health farm to be tuned up to his former pitch of exceptional fitness. Bond expects a trying two weeks. The last thing he expects is an adversary more deadly, more ruthless even than SMERSH.

Sent to the Bahamas in search of two stolen nuclear missiles, Bond still manages to hit the casino tables and act the playboy, working to get close to the sultry Domino, the mistress of treasure hunter Emilio Largo.

Thunderball is an incredible adventure that finds Agent 007 tackling SPECTRE, a daring crime ring operating in the Gulf Stream, which has perpetrated the most arrogant blackmail demand ever attempted.

Quotes & Awards

  • “By some latent intuition, Fleming was able to peer beyond the Cold War limitations of mere spy fiction and to anticipate the emerging milieu of the Colombian cartels, Osama bin Laden and indeed the Russian mafia.”

    Christopher Hitchens

  • “Bond is what every man would like to be and what every woman would like to have between her sheets.”

    Raymond Chandler

  • Thunderball is a terrific book…Extremely moody and dark in tone, and full of dynamic action.”

Raymond Benson, author of High Time to Kill

  • “If you wish to steal atom bombs, this is how you must do it! Fleming’s mastery of detail enables the reader to suspend disbelief.”

    Sunday Telegraph

" As with all of the James Bond stories, it is rife with racism and sexism, and barely resembles the movie of the same name. If you can get past all that, it's a quick, exciting page-turner. "

" A fun read. Inspires you to want to move to the Caribbean "

" So far this has been one of the better Bond books. Good plot, more realistic characters (although Fleming does wander off giving pointless details at the time). Fairly fast pace too. "

" "Thunderball" was another of the James Bond books that had big shoes to fill. It basically had the same plot of the cinematic adventure(s), but it came up lacking in characterization; I was particularly disappointed with the characterizations of the story's villain and love interest. It adds insult to injury that these were two aspects that they really knocked out of the ballpark with the original cinematic adventure. Also, Fleming's prose is becoming a little harder to follow at parts, specifically the introduction of Blofeld, Domino's infatuation with the "Hero," and Bond's tussle with Largo in the story's climax.
