Britain had the biggest empire the world has ever known. At one time a quarter of the global land mass was British. Over a third of the world was insured at Lloyds. At his coronation, more than 400 million people saluted George V. Truly, the sun never set on this historical phenomenon. Whatever the day, whatever the hour, somewhere on the globe, the empire worked and played the British game, often absurdly so. The story of the British Empire is one of enormous personalities, adventure, scientific and maritime development, and the building of one of the most complex international administrations the world has ever seen. The series shows the history of exploration from the 16th century, but more importantly from the mid-18th century to the period shortly before the First World War. Download and start listening now!

Listener Opinions

" A whirlwind history of Brittan. I listened to the audio book - and sometimes listened twice as this is a very condensed history. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Jane | 8/4/2011

" A good history of the families that shaped the British Isles. A good history lesson. "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Mary | 10/18/2010

" If I were grading this as a history assignment I would put it at a C- at best. It is nothing but block quotes stitched together with a bit of the author's own words. A very little bit. "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Byron | 10/16/2008

" A very good compressed history of the UK. A good book to take when traveling there and viewing historic sites. "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Rebecca | 9/4/2008

" Too much! A good book, but if you are interested in history, as I am, take the time to look at individual events than trying to cover the whole of everything in one go. My mind just switchd off and I'd forgottent the start before I got to the end. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Malte | 9/16/2007

" For the first time a now have an idea about the british (english) history. The quote rich book is interesting, but as we progress in time the sources get easier to find and thus more quotes are used, wich makes the last chapters a little longer than I would have prefered "
