Publisher Description

One of the true classics of American literature, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz has stirred the imagination of young and old alike for over four generations. Originally published in 1900, it was the first truly American fairy tale, as Baum crafted a wonderful out of such familiar items as a cornfield scarecrow, a mechanical woodman, and a humbug wizard who used old-fashioned hokum to express that universal theme, "There's no place like home."

Follow the adventures of young Dorothy Gale and her dog, Toto, as their Kansas house is swept away by a cyclone and they find themselves in a strange land called Oz. Here she meets the Munchkins and joins the Scarecrow, Tin Woodman, and the Cowardly Lion on an unforgettable journey to the Emerald City, home of the all-powerful Wizard of Oz.

"I've watched the original movie so many times since childhood and I was really excited to finally pick up the book. There were many differences between book vs. movie. One major difference is that the movie made it seem like Oz was just a dream. In the book - Oz is real! Dorothy's house really did land in Oz and all of her adventures really did happen. The characters in Oz did not resemble her family members back home. The story was fantastic! The world building was awesome! I went to see the most recent movie "Oz the Great and Powerful" last week. I loved that they included many aspects of the book in that movie. The Oz that I pictured while reading the book is pretty much the Oz that was depicted in the movie. Right down to the little china town :) I liked this book a whole lot and I will probably read the rest of the series eventually."

" Finally started to read the Oz series. I've watched the movie since I was a little girl, and wanted to see what the books are like. This first one is quite different from the movie in places, but still pretty good. I liked it enough to want to continue on with the series (I'm reading them on my kindle). "

" I've read this before, a long time ago, and I wasn't disappointed by my re-read. This book truly is a classic. It is easy to read (it was written for children after all) and can be finished in almost one sitting. What I REALLY loved was the forward for this particular edition. It has some great insights into the story and was VERY well written. "

" I gave this book 3 stars mostly because of the redundancy of the writing. It reminded me of a simple Dr. Seuess book but with a longer and more twisted plot. It would have been more enjoyable if it were a lot shorter. With that said, I liked the book more than the movie only because it included so much more. I did LOVE the movie however. It was neat reading all the differences from book to movie like the ruby red slippers were originally silver, the Tin Woodman liked to chop the heads off things that got in his way (that definitely should've been included in the movie!) and the tale behind the winged monkies. I should've read this a long time ago. I wasn't even aware that there was a whole series. "

" I know I read this when I was a kid, but I don't have any memory of it. Had fun reading it again. This is so different from the 1939 movie version. I actually like this better. Since there are 14 Oz books, I may have to read them all! "
