Oona Crate was born to be the Wizard's apprentice, but she has another destiny in mind.

Despite possessing the rare gift of natural magic, Oona wants to be a detective. Eager for a case, she wants to show her uncle - the Wizard of Dark Street - that logic is as powerful as magic. But when someone attacks the Wizard, Oona must delve even deeper into the world of magic.

"A skillful blend of fantasy and mystery. It is truly difficult to write a good mystery for young readers, and Odyssey has managed to do that while setting it in a magical world that is clear and entrancing. Oona Crate is a stupendous heroine and I hope to read more of her crime solving adventures. A sequel, please, Mr. Odyssey!"

" I wanted this book to be terribly intriguing and a new Harry Potter for girls. It just kept falling short. I kept wishing things were more mystical or whimsical. You often know when you read a book that everything is going to work out ok, but it still takes your breath away while you wait. I didn't get that feeling here. "

" This is an award-winning debut novel about a 12-year-old in New York City in 1877 who relinquishes her wizarding skills to become a detective. Gr. 3-5. "

" 3.5 stars. Good, but not great, and I'm not at all sure I'd read another book about Oona Crate. I find her rather annoying. "

" A cute story about a young magician who wants to deny her talents. Oona Crate would rather be a detective, but is pulled into her magical world by the "disappearance" of her magician uncle, who has raised her. It's a cute little story, perfect for upper elementary students. "

" Excellent read! A mystery with an intelligent and spunky protagonist, lots of potential assailants, a crime based in old and dangerous magic, and just enough twists and turns to keep readers thinking! Perfect for fans of Blue Balliet, the Red Blazer Girls, or Ellen Raskin! "

" Pretty cute mix of magic and mystery. Not particularly groundbreaking or astoundingly original, but still solid and with some appealing characters. I'm assuming it's going to be a series, because practically everything becomes a series, and if so I'll check out the next one. "
