" 1987 John Newbery Medal winner. It's recommended for ages 9 to 12. However, these will have to be skilled readers to fully understand all the words in the book. "

" I loved this book! I admit I was drawn to it in my Mother's library because of the picture on the front, but I read this book in one sitting. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Chanel Debooy | 2/6/2014

" This book was fun to read because the language in it wasn't modern times based. It took place years ago and you could imagine the accents of the people in it. I liked how at first the prince was a brat and was rude to everyone, and at the end he transformed after seeing he wasn't better then everyone else. Jemmy, the main character, was great. He could read and write when the royal prince couldn't, and if it wasn't for him I don't think they could have made it out alive! This book took me no time to read because it was interesting and fun along the whole way. "

" This is a cute Newberry Award winning book about a bratty prince and his "Whipping boy" by the end of the story the prince learns how to be caring and compassionate. "

" Not much to say about this book. It's a decent piece that is just one of those books I would have my own children read. "

" I liked it... it was pretty good its not one of my favorites though... I have to many favorites. circling my mind saying "Where awesome where cool we are not doggy poo." And let me say this was no doggy poo this was Hamburger Helper. "

" In this 1987 Newbery book, a bratty prince and his whipping boy escape the royal household only to fall into the hands of ruffians. The tale's simple, short, and full of adventure -- easy enough to recommend to young readers though I much prefer the author's Gold Rush tale, By the Great Horn Spoon. "

" I read this book on my quest to read all Newbury winners. This book is on the younger side of the winner spectrum. It is basic and predictable, but still a good story and one that a 2nd or 3rd grader would love. "

" This is a very easy read. I think that it is a sencond or third grade reading level. I remember having a teacher read it to me and I enjoyed it so much I bought the book. Now years later I have yet to read it and can't remember at all what it is about, so I decided to read it and really enjoyed it. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Diane | 6/4/2012

" It was a pleasant read, but I've enjoyed other Fleischman stories much more. We all know the bad prince will reform and the whipping boy will get respect. The journey wasn't too original. I did like the bear. "

" A delightful reminder that enslaving and torturing impoverished children for the uses of the royalty can lead to heartwarming life lessons for all. "
