Publisher Description

Mark Slouka's novel begins with the child of Czech immigrants to the US, now living in New York, who has been brought up on the folklore of his parents' homeland. As an adult he becomes aware that he has no knowledge of his parents during the Nazi occupation of Prague. He makes a journey back to Czechoslovakia and it is only then that he discovers their part in the assassination of Reinhard Heydrich, the notorious 'butcher of Prague' and begins to understand his mother Ivana's unhappiness.

Intertwined with this gripping history is a passionate love story, the tragic consequences of which transcend both years and continents.

"I think this book was a bit like an autobiography- but I loved it so real life and true about what happened back in the war, definitely not the type of book I would usually read but it was a great story and I may look around for some similar books!"

" If you can get to the third part of the book, it's a heartbreaking and beautiful love story. "

" There are some interesting vignettes in the book and I like the structure, but overall it was not very satisfying. In the first section the narrator tells of his family life with his WWII Czech-immigrant parents. In the second section after their deaths he unsuccessfully tries to piece together the mystery of their relationship and her love of another man. The third is the narrator's imagined love story of his mother and her lover, a resistance fighter who assassinated Heydrich, and also tells how his mother ended up with his father. "

" The Visible World is a bleak and depressing novel told as if a factual account of the author's parents' lives in the Czech republic during Nazi occupation. At times it's very poetic and at others, just lethargic. I enjoy stories of this time period but this isn't one of my favorites. "

" I enjoyed this easy to read book about two lovers caught in the middle of war-time Czecoslovakia. I found some of his descriptions, metaphors and similies a little repetative, therefore only scores a 3 out of 5. "

" I didn't like this book-I kind of felt pressured to like or feel anything fr the characters and like The Outcast, I just didn't. I also found general writing style and first person narrative grating and after weeks of perseverance I finally gave up two thirds of the way through. Disapointing. "

" Well, I read this book just a few pages at a time, which may account for the fact that I never felt particularly involved with the characters. A somewhat different love story, but it didn't grip me enough to make me recommend it...... "

" An account of how one woman's experiences in occupied Czechoslovakia during WWII affected her life and that of her family. Nicely written but there are so many other, similar novels that it's hard to see this one as anything special. "
