Publisher Description

A dead heiress on a train, a murdered recluse, a wealthy playboy slain at a costume ball are but a few of the unfortunate victims of confounding crimes committed in the pages of Agatha Christie’s The Under Dog and Other Stories, a superior collection of short mystery fiction all featuring Hercule Poirot as the investigator.

A beautiful heiress has been found dead on a train. A playboy has been stabbed through the heart during a costume ball. An elderly woman suspects that she is being slowly poisoned to death. A prince fears for his reputation when his fiancée is embroiled in another man's murder. A forgotten recluse makes headlines after he is shot in the head.

Who but Agatha Christie could concoct such canny crimes? Who but Belgian detective Hercule Poirot could possibly solve them? It's a challenge to be met—in a triumph of detection.

"As many mysteries as I read, I have never read any Hercule Poirot. This is me remedying this situation. While I think he'd annoy me in real life, he an entertaining character and the mysteries keep you guessing. I can see why these mysteries are classics and timeless."

  • “It would take a remarkably alert reader to single out the murderer before the last page in each story.”

" Reading the books in chronological order, it was interesting to "go back in time" in Poirot's career, so to speak. Still, not some of her strongest short stories. "

" I love Agatha Christie! I love Hercule Poirot! The only complaint I have about this is that I think Agatha Christie is better at novels than short stories -- it gives her more time to develop the plot. "

" I'm sure I have read this before, but it's been so long I think I might get away with it! I just need something to read while I wait for some books to come in that I have on hold at the library. You can't go wrong with Mr Poirot. "

" A fun book, but I think I like Agatha Christie's full-length mysteries better. Some of these stories, especially the middle one, seemed over too fast and solved too easily. I would like to have seen each of these stories fleshed out into a full-length novel. "

" Poirot/Hastings short stories written in the 20's but bundled in the 50's. I find I don't enjoy the early-career short stories as much, as they don't seem as fleshed out. Some interesting stories and solutions, but not as satisfying than the novel-length books or the later-career short stories. "
