In a small, grim room, the body of a woman is discovered, panic and pain etched in her face. The scene matches in every detail a series of murders two years ago, murders that ended when irrefutable forensic evidence secured the conviction of a deeply disturbed young man named Derek Tyler.

But there's no way Tyler could have killed the latest victim. He's been locked up in a mental institution since his trial, barely speaking a word. So is there a copycat?

All his years of experience tell top criminal psychologist Dr. Tony Hill that there isn't, but that would make the murders literally impossible. While Hill tries to crack Tyler, DCI Carol Jordan and her team must mount a desperate undercover operation to trap the murderer, a decision that will have terrible consequences.

As the tension mounts, a mixture of psychological insight and dogged detective work leads inexorably to a terrifying climax where Tony faces one of the most perverse killers he has ever encountered.

" Why is mediocre writing somehow considered standard in the thriller/police procedural genre? McDermid is the perfect example of a writer with a really excellent series--cleverly plotted, with complex main characters and even well-fleshed out secondary ones. But the prose is so plodding and cliche-ridden that it detracts from the fast-paced narrative. "

" Suspenseful police procedural/thriller set in England. Characters Carol Jordan, Tony Hill and others. Good story. "

" The fourth in the series and I am still liking them. A very convoluted serial killer mystery with the main killer being in the shadows directing the actual killers. Very much a thinking man's mystery. The main characters are still doing their two steps towards each other then a step back but the relationship is evolving in a fairly realistic manner. "

" Excellent, my kind of book a bit scary but I loved it all the way through and had great difficulty putting it down, I think I've read this in record time, but I have to say I have been reading until the early hours. I've read others with Dr. Tony Hill and DCI Carol Jordon, if she won't get it together with him I'll have him,lol.. "

" Was a good book, enough to keep you from wanting to put it down. Val has a great way of writing and remains true to the genre, unlike some of the others who have "popularised" or become to "arty". Some parts are a little far fetched, but all in all a recommended read. "

I like the way Val writes. "

" Not too bad, but not too memorable either. I keep seeing the Tony Hill of the TV series, which kind of gets in the way. This one is about someone murdering prostitutes (what a shocking twist!) who’s being controlled by someone else to do it. OK. "
