For Iris, childhood memories are of long hot summers spent playing with her cousin Rosmarie in her grandmother's garden, a place where redcurrants turned to pale tears on the branches of trees and beautiful Aunt Inga shook sparks from the tips of her fingers. But now her grandmother is dead, and along with inheriting the property, Iris finds that she also inherits her family's darkest secrets.

Reluctant to keep it, but reluctant to sell, Iris spends one more summer at the house. By day she swims at the local lake, where she rediscovers a childhood companion. At night she roams through familiar rooms, exploring the shadows of the past. In the flicker between remembrance and forgetting, Iris recalls an enigmatic grandfather who went to war and came back a different man, the night Rosmarie fell through the conservatory roof and shattered her family's lives, and a moment of love that made all the trees in the orchard bloom overnight.

" I read this in German, but I'll rate it in English. The book was good enough to get me to read the whole thing, but it was slow going. I have to also say that it was a very dissatisfying story and a bad shot at magical realism. The metaphors were obvious (the apple tree is the sole of the house/ of the women in the family) and the lead up to the Rosemarie's death was a like a train running off a mountain. I can imagine that Germans think the book is really clever, but I just thought it was unnecessarily mysterious, and in the end left me hating all the characters anyway. "

" Ich mag den Schreibstil und am Anfang mochte ich auch die Story, aber dann entwickelte sie sich zu einem Familien-Drama. Ich mag Geschichten nicht, in denen es um die Verwicklungen und Dramen in der Vergangenheit einer Familie geht. Ist mir zu anstrengend. Aber an sich war das Buch gut, also wer solche Dinge mag, dem kann ich es empfehlen. "
