Publisher Description

Comic book superheroines bend steel, travel across time and space, and wield the awesome forces of nature. These mighty females do everything that male superheroes do. But they have to work their wonders in skirts and high heels. The Supergirls, a cultural history of comic book heroines, asks whether their world of fantasy is that different from our own. Are the stories of Wonder Woman's search for an identity, Batwoman and Power Girl's battle for equality, and Manhunter's juggling of a crime fighting career and motherhood also an alternative saga of modern American women?

"It' a thoughtful and entertaining read, especially for a feminist geek girl like me. However, it would have been even better if there were illustrations since some of the older heroines aren't well known to younger comic fans and it is a bit inconvenient to google them out while reading the book. "

" I love this informing, rich history of female superheroes. While I grew up reading a lot of comic books, I didn't know the history of female superheroes. I feel after reading this book, there's simply a lot more to learn about all kinds of superheroes. "

" I didn't' finish this---too bust trying to keep up with my book clubs and my health care policy books. It was a fun read which told the story of this country's view of women and femininity as seen through the portrayal of women as comic superheroes. "

" This was a pretty interesting read. There are times that drag on when he is going into detail, but I think that is more to help people who don't know much about these characters. A lot of it is probably going to information you already know, but seeing more how the Comic Code Authority drastically changed how women were written, and the ensuing issues in the following decades. " The book was a long list with very broad generalizations and connections made between the time that a work was published in and the representation of women in comics. Total bummer. "

" You want to be believable when talking about female superheroes and gender issues in comics? Try not to refer to women as slatterns, trollops, or skanks. "
