"A must read for anyone raised in an organized religion, esp. Catholic. the bonus of sf is the parallels with our own world. Living in the Pacific Rim for 25 years, we saw first hand the religious elimination of cultures by organized religions. Imposing one's "true" values on another has be tragic throughout history. This novelist understands and shares. At the end of this edition there is a Q&A with the author. Gives us another step to understanding and appreciation of the writing craft."

" Fabulous, just brilliantly written, characterisations were incredible, the story was told so well, unravelled so skillfully and the salvation of the main character so carefully developed. "

" I read this book solely based on the fact that it is about Jesuits in space. That's all I knew about it. I have gone to Jesuit schools for more than five years and love Ignatian theology, and the thought of Jesuits in space was too amusing to pass up. Unfortunately, I probably shouldn't read books based on amusing topic instead of recommendations and good reviews. This book was strangely written and switched POV at strange and confusing moments. Really important facts were mentioned as if I were already supposed to know them and scenes that would have been really interesting only took a few pages, or were skipped entirely, while pages and pages and pages were given to sort-of-plots that didn't go anywhere. The alien species were a disappointment, which is pretty horrible for a sci-fi space book. Most of all, I could hardly figure out what "deep questions" this book was trying to discuss. I dunno. It was a strange and unfulfilling read. "

" I still love this book 10 years later, but I am also still frustrated by some of the glossing over in the last third. So much of the book is written in great detail that its a bit shameful of Russell to hurry through the last couple of Rakhat natives. "

" This book could haunt me for a long time. Russell crafts a beautiful and, at times, devastating narrative of first contact. It's a classic science fiction premise, and at the same time that she does justice to the geeky aspects, she uses it to express so much about love, solidarity and courage. "

" One of the best books that I have ever read, and I've read a lot of books. Ms. Russell's take on the traditional sci-fi plot of "First Contact" is engrossing. I couldn't put it down! "
