Publisher Description

The 1930s were a decade of enormous uncertainty--for the world, for America, and in particular for one lonely, struggling mother and her disabled son. Their story is one of love and enormous sacrifices in the face of circumstances horrendous beyond belief. When her husband leaves her for someone else, Mary and little Luke are out on their own in a world that has no room for the poor and disabled. Especially not at a time when most Americans are simply trying to survive their economic woes and job losses. But then arrives The Gift...where has it come from, and why? How can a young boy who can neither hear nor speak provide comfort, direction, and sometimes challenges to seekers who learn of the special ability? Whatever the source, its presence brings a single shaft of light and hope to Mary and her beloved Luke. Will it be enough?

"Jack is a deaf mute child growing up in the Midwest during the Great Depression. Mary is his mother trying to keep her son with her inside of sending him to an institution which is what her husband wants to do with him. Mary eventually leaves her husband with her son Jack when she finds out that he plans on leaving her and Jack first and penniless. She soon discovers that Jack has the gift of prophecy and she finds those who are kind to her and her son to help her out. She is a single mother who has fallen on hard times and has a hard time trusting in God because of the things that have happened to her. She eventually finds the strength to trust in God again and even to open up her heart up to love. The authors do a wonderful job in describing how children with disabilities were treated during this time period also in the circus part of the book which is a small part of the book the circus slang was correct. This is a heartwarming light read for the summer months that is not too preachy that some inspirational books can be."

" I like books set in the early 1900's. This was a touching book about a mother's love, and the length she will go for her child. I liked all the different characters that Mary and Jack came in contact with. Some of them even surprised me. "

" Very interesting... a little wierd in a good way. Not a Typical book at all. Beautiful story of a mother and her relationship with her son. "

" This book was OK. I don't always expect fiction to be completely realistic or believable - in fact, I think I'm one who can often see beyond the story to a deeper message. I appreciate the merit of the author's message, but I find the holes in this story absolutely gaping and the symbolism shallow. I can't help but to think that if I were the one who submitted this story to a publisher it would've been rejected outright. (It helps to have famous family connections . . .) "

" Though I am a religiious person, I really did not like this book. There is, in literature, a need for "suspension of disbelief" in an unlikely plot. I just could not get past the basic premise of the book or some of the too-good-to-be-true coincidences. "

" I was going to give this 3 stars, but the last few pages really caught me. It brought tears to my eyes. The mother's emotional struggle to do right for her child, at any cost was extremely powerful. This book reminds us that people should never underestimate the bond between a mother and a child. "
