" This particular edition of stories by H.P. Lovecraft was my first exposure to this master of horror. Most of his stories are what I'd call psychological horror stories, taking human being's worst fears and telling tales of how we face them. Another theme of his writing are those stories revolving around The Necronomicon and the ancient evils that accompany it. These are straight up horror stories and very satisfying if you like creepy stories rather than gory stories. "

" If you were to decide, never having read Lovecraft, to read him, it's a good idea to start with The Shadow over Innsmouth. It has, in equal measure, investigative drama, carefully crafted otherness and, if you look close enough, an interesting perspective at the modernity-tradition disconnect. It's tasty and must be read with a healthy measure of reflection. "

" I cannot read these stories after dark. After all these years, Lovecraft still freaks me out! The outsider is still my favorite story. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Quincy | 2/2/2014

" This story provides a different angle into Lovecraft's world. It isn't just the "Old Ones" that mankind has to fear. "

" I thought that this was a very enjoyable novella; definitely near the peak of Lovecraft's writing career. Guy goes to mysterious Innsmouth, and very nearly is captured by the resident fish-people. Creepy, creepy story. "

" If you like this story I recommend reading another Lovecraft short called The Thing on the Doorstep since one of the characters in the short story is an Innsmouth native. Plus it's a very good, spine-tingler in it's own right. "

" Creepy! This one assumes you know a little about Cthulhu. Not a great introductory Lovecraft, I would read a few others to get the full creep out of this one haha :D "

" The Shadow Over Innsmouth is one of Lovecraft's classic stories. The narrator happens to take a detour to Innsmouth. There is an interesting (and frightening) twist at the end. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Jevhad | 10/31/2010

    "
Though you can foresee the end, it is still a great read by the master of cosmic horror. I really enjoy it, perhaps because I guess that's the way I'd react in the end when I learned a truth like the main character did. "
