Publisher Description

There is an old, empty house in Devil's Cleave, a deep gorge that leads from the high moors down to the harbour village of Hollow Bay. The house is Crickley Hall and it's large and grim, somehow foreboding. It's rumoured to be haunted. It's thought to hold a secret. Despite some reservations, the Caleighs move in, searching for respite in this beautiful part of North Devon, seeking peace and perhaps to come to terms with what's happened to them as a family.

But all is not well with the house. They hear unaccountable noises. A cellar door they shut every night is always open again in the morning. They see things that cannot be real. The house is the last place the Caleighs should have come to, for the terror that unfolds is beyond belief. Soon they will discover the secret horror of Crickley Hall....

"I was given a loan of this book from a fellow Stephen King fan, and it's an enjoyable read, the tension nicely cranked up all the way through the book! Also I like the touch, on how James Herbert waited until the last minute to merge a character from the wartime, with one from the present, a neat trick to play on the reader! So why only 4 stars? Well the ending, for me it was just a little too fairytale like! But otherwise a good read, I could hardly put it down!"

" I really liked this book. It was really well-written and I liked the characters in it. James Herbert is a very good writer and he is very good at adding suspense to his books. This book had moments of horror, sadness and the ending was worth waiting for. I would recommend it to anyone who likes a good ghost story. "

" I enjoyed this gothic in atmosphere haunted house story. Mr. Herbert writes in detail, which I enjoy; it allows me to picture everything. A well thought out storyline, in my opinion. And, yes, even though we may anticipate what's coming, getting there is a good ride. "

" It's thrilling and exciting and I enjoyed reading it. Some of the writing style did grate slightly, with the constant reminders that local characters were speaking in a Devonshire accent. Not a great work of literature but enjoyable all the same. "
