Publisher Description

The smouldering follow-up to the international blockbuster 100 Strokes of the Brush Before Bed. Melissa P.'s fictionalized memoir, 100 Strokes of the Brush Before Bed, became an international literary phenomenon, selling over two million copies worldwide and inspiring profiles in Vanity Fair and The New York Times, as well as a warning from the pope. The Scent of Your Breath, the second installment in the Melissa P.'s series of confessions, is a stirring tale of obsessive love and destructive passion.

Melissa, desperate for love and willing to do anything to find it, is now a successful writer in Rome, living with her new lover, Thomas. But as soon as she meets Viola, a woman from Thomas's past, sexual passion and insecurity mount in tandem, and Melissa is consumed with jealousy.

Written as a confessional letter to her mother, the story that follows is one of dark obsession, violent lust, and soul-destroying talent. Driven by Melissa's singular voice - that unique and compelling combination of impetuous naivete and poetic sophistication that has mesmerized readers in 31 countries - The Scent of Your Breath blurs the boundaries between reality and fantasy and delves deep into the disturbing yet strangely familiar mind of a teenage girl terrorized by love.

"This diary of a teenage girl's sex life is a work of deceptive innocence. Influenced by Nabokov and Anais Nin, it is both erotic and literary. She writes: 'I want love, diary. I want to feel my heart melt, to see the stalactites of my ice shatter and sink in the river of passion, of beauty.' The narrator searches for love but the men she meets only want sex. It is the first novel of a young writer."

" My God. Italy, I'd like to turn you over my knee and whip hell out of you for publishing this dingy little fool of a book. I mean, at every page you think to yourself, "I feel like this was written by some jackass teenager," and then you have to stop and second-guess whether you're just like lacking in compassion or whatever because it WAS IN FACT written by a jackass teenager. To suppose that this somehow "scandalized a nation" seems enormously implausible, unless the secret lives of teenage girls had, up until this book's publication, actually been secret . . . which they had not . . . and so . . . man wtf. " Do not reach for this is you are looking for a 50 Shades of Gray-esque erotic experience. This is really more awkward and depressing than anything. And how did her mom NEVER grill her for going out and like banging all these different dudes every night? REALLY?! Oh well. I'm not totally hating though, I think it IS at times a very honest and raw glimpse into one teenage girl's struggle to accept love. I didn't love it, though. :( "

" Read this one back in high school (about 8 years ago) so my 25-year-old self might not appreciate it as much now. This rating is from what I remember. Which is this: I remember there being a lot of sexual material, I remember it being quite sad & shocking but not really "erotic" and I remember really enjoying it anyway. So there ya go. "

" Supposedly true erotic tales of Melissa P. Interesting keyhole into the life of a sexually charged adolescent girl and her foray in accross and over the lines that define "normal" sexual development. Her musings and reflections are tender and sad but bold in their defiance of taboo. What is ok to know, to do, to say, to write? Pulpy but intriging look at a volatile period in adolescent development. "

" Not sexy, not hot, not erotic. A bored teenager had a lot of bad sex with a lot of lame guys and wrote about it. I keep reading to find out why, and I think I did: she was bored and dumb. "
