When Father is taken away unexpectedly, Roberta, Peter, Phyllis and their mother have to leave their comfortable life in London to go and live in a small cottage in the country.

The children seek solace in the nearby railway station and make friends with Perks the Porter and the Station Master himself. Each day, Roberta, Peter and Phyllis run down the field to the railway track and wave at the passing London train, sending their love to Father. Little do they know that the kindly old gentleman passenger who waves back holds the key to their father's disappearance.

"I enjoyed reading about the three school age children who suddenly find their circumstances much changed. They are excellent examples of kids striving to do what's right, being helpful and brave, and finding their own adventures and friends. They make mistakes amd argue with each other, but always make good in the end."

" A story about children who do things that only children in stories ever actually do, and it is okay if you decide to confuse this with the Boxcar children. I can say the latter, because I did. "

" This is an older one. I didn't find it thrilling by any means, but it was a nice book to read every so often and eventually finish up. It kind of reminded me of Anne of Green Gables in a way, in that the book is kind of made up of retellings of events/catastrophes/little occurrences that happen in the lives of the main characters each day. Cute and sweet. "

" I read this to my 3 children at a time when they were similar ages as the children in the story. They loved it! We watched the movie after the book and loved that too. I think it may have been a Master Piece Theatre movie. "

" Wonderful Children's book. Written in 1906 - very well written. Listened to it on an Audio book. Story was very well woven and the characters were all well developed. Really enjoyed how the author would get into the children's heads - I can remember thinking that way myself. "

" I remember reading this at a young age and being delighted in the action and mystery Now after reading it again I can look back, and see these books as predecessors of the Lemony Snicket stories. Not quite as depressing but just as entertaining! Fun reading for any youngster, no matter what the age. "
