Publisher Description

Women of the Sparrow family have unusual gifts. Elinor can detect falsehood. Her daughter, Jenny, can see people's dreams when they sleep. Granddaughter Stella has a mental window to the future - a future that she might not want to see. In Alice Hoffman's latest tour de force, this vivid and intriguing cast of characters confronts a haunting past - and a very current murder - against the evocative backdrop of small-town New England. By turns chilling and enchanting, The Probable Future chronicles the Sparrows' legacy as young Stella struggles to cope with her disturbing clairvoyance. Her potential to ruin or redeem becomes unbearable when one of her premonitions puts her father in jail, wrongly accused of homicide. Yet this ordeal also leads Stella to the grandmother she was forbidden to meet, and to an historic family home full of talismans from her ancestors.

"I loved this book. It has been a while since I've read it, so I can offer few specific details, but I remember loving Hoffman's sense of character. Her writing is magical without being up in the rafters of faery land. Magic is twisted up with history. There is a visceral sense of place in her novels. In this one, I loved the parallel story lines, present and past, as well as the sharply described characters for whom I really felt a strong connection, understanding, and emotional attachment. Love her work!"

" My favorite used to be Practical Magic but The Probable Future is now and will forever be my favorite Alice Hoffman. I absolutely love the last paragraph, the greatest paragraph she has ever written! "

" The stories of three generations of women are told, each one inheriting a family legacy at age thirteen - gifts that make them unique and different, yet facing similar problems. I loved this book. "

" This was interesting, and though I'd not put the author of Practical Magic together with this book,it felt like the same kind of genre if not a parallel story line, and I'd lumped them in my head together before I realized that they were both written by Alice Hoffman. (I actually never read Practical Magic, but saw the movie.) The pseudo magic, a house full of women, fighting between family members and a (pretty much)worthless male character all tied into each other for the two story lines. That said, I liked this book, it was clean to the point of not describing immorality, but it was there. I enjoyed it but not to the point of telling all my friends to read it. "

" The book skimmed the surface in a lot of places where I felt it could dig a lot deeper. And the ages of the characters (Stella particularly) were patently unbelievable. Practical Magic is still my favorite, but this was fun. "

" Read the book more as a lark, expecting little more than low grade entertainment. I was pleasantly surprised. Characters in the book were unique and interesting. Hoffman's imagination was ever present leading the reader to assume or second guess nothing. "
