Marion Zimmer Bradley wrote some of the finest science fiction in print. In this story, Dr Jay Allison has a split personality. One side is a cool, emotionless parasitoligist; the other is a free-spirited adventurer. The latter has been held firmly in control by the former for many years, but now it needs to be called forth to save the Terran colony on the planet Darkover. A plague of Trailmen's Fever threatens to wipe out every Terran on the planet. The free-spirited part of Dr. Allison is needed to lead a party deep into Trailmen's territory to beg their assistance, but then the parasitologist's knowledge is needed to create the cure. Will the experiment to separate and then rejoin the personalities succeed? And will it be in time for the colony to survive?

"It's perhaps shameful to admit that I, as a professed Marion Zimmer Bradley aficionado, had no contact with Darkover until just now reading this novella. At least that wrong has now been righted." — Rick (4 out of 5 stars)

" This was a vague short book. There really wasn't much to it. That surprised me. It was okay. Hard to follow in some areas. Could have been better. I'm trying to get into the whole Darkover series. A friend recommended it. "
Marion Eleanor Zimmer Bradley (1930–1999) received her BA from Hardin Simmons University in Abilene, Texas, and her graduate degree from the University of California–Berkeley. She was a science fiction and fantasy fan since her teens and had written as long as she could remember, but only for school magazines and fanzines until she sold her first professional short story to Vortex Science Fiction. She wrote everything from science fiction to Gothics but is probably best known for her Darkover novels and her Arthurian novel, The Mists of Avalon. In addition to her novels, she edited magazines, both amateur and professional.
