One afternoon in May, Zoe Duncan's 13-year-old daughter goes missing from her own backyard. The police think Samantha ran away because she's unhappy about her mother's upcoming marriage - but Zoe doesn't believe it. In fact, she's willing to do anything to bring Sam home, even if it means losing her job, her beautiful home, her fiancé. Even if it means divulging all her secrets to a private investigator.
Jonathan Stivers is a P.I. who donates his time to The Last Stand, a victims' charity in Sacramento. He's good at what he does, the best. But never has he had fewer leads to work with - or been more attracted to a client. Jonathan's sure of only one thing: Sam was taken by someone close to the family. He doesn't know how close until he realizes that the perfect couple next door is anything but.

"I was on the edge of my seat reading this crime thriller. I found it odd that this book was labeled as a romance, there wasn't much of romance to this novel. I thought the description sounded good and realistic, so I picked it up. The plot puts you right in the center of the novel. Some parts of it just made me feel sick, and creepy. Other parts make you want to reach out and hug poor Zoe. I didn't realize this is the 7th in a series. I'll have to read the first six and compare." — Traci (4 out of 5 stars)

" Loved this book! Read it in a couple of days...disturbing but sucks you in "
" This particular one I can't seemed to get interested in, it started out very fast and well, is just not kind of reading; not saying by no means it's not a good book because it is. "
" Decent book -- one of those you know who the bad guy is the whole time...the suspense is whether or not the victims can figure it out. Entertaining enough to potentially look for more books from the "perfect" series by this author. "
" Romantic Suspense at it's frightening best. You'll never trust your neighbors again. "
" Excellent book, but not a surprise. Brenda Novak is a very talented author! "
" Excellent story. Kept you guessing and on the edge all the way through. Didn't realize this was number 4 in a series till I was halfway done, so back to number 1! "
" Pretty good! Kind of psycho though but enjoyable read!! "
" Although I read this book when I was about 13 I thought I must write a review anyway . I enjoyed the book because I'm a sucker for suspense . I did find the couple disturbing but it's what made the book interesting on the other hand I could not stand the relationship of the detective and mother . "
" This was a disturbing read but very good....I loved this book "
" Brenda, Raised the bar with this book. Definitely on my keeper shelf. "
" Loved this book, it was a great book in the series, and I love this author! "
" This is a good thriller ... rahter disturbing to think some of these people can exist in our world, but the news proves it to be true. "
" Light reading. Despite the 3 stars. Hard to put down. "
" Definitely Not What I Expected! My 2nd Favorite Book "
" As usual this author made you not want to put the book down. Each book only gets better in the Last Stand series. And each book is also unique. "
" I didn't like the female lead character from the start. I couldn't finish the book. "
" I was so enthralled in this book that in the last few pages I took it to work with me and finished at my desk. Colin was the guy you wanted to hate from beginning to the end and Tiffany played the dumb wife accepting of whatever her husband said. "
" This was disturbing on so many levels. "
