Publisher Description

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER—soon to be an HBO limited series starring Ben Mendelsohn!

An unspeakable crime. A confounding investigation. At a time when the King brand has never been stronger, he has delivered one of his most unsettling and compulsively readable stories.

An eleven-year-old boy’s violated corpse is found in a town park. Eyewitnesses and fingerprints point unmistakably to one of Flint City’s most popular citizens. He is Terry Maitland, Little League coach, English teacher, husband, and father of two girls. Detective Ralph Anderson, whose son Maitland once coached, orders a quick and very public arrest. Maitland has an alibi, but Anderson and the district attorney soon add DNA evidence to go with the fingerprints and witnesses. Their case seems ironclad.

As the investigation expands and horrifying answers begin to emerge, King’s propulsive story kicks into high gear, generating strong tension and almost unbearable suspense. Terry Maitland seems like a nice guy, but is he wearing another face? When the answer comes, it will shock you as only Stephen King can.

"Another truly wonderous novel by Mr. King! I couldn't quit listening, and was in such a hurry to find out what happened next that I had to make myself rewind some parts and listen again to make sure I understood every single detail. As the violent world of crime and serial murder collide with the supernatural, characters are forced to face their fears and limitations in order to stop the murderer. With a visit from one of my favorite King characters, Holly Gibney (Mercedes Benz series), the other characters in this novel are so close to home that I wanted the story to continue on past the ending. Finally, Stephen King couldn't find a better narrator than Will Patton-I could listen to his voice tell any story, but he has just the right tone and inflection to keep you hanging on the edge of your seat. Overall, this is definitely one of my favorite novels of the year, and I will listen to it again, very soon. "

Quotes

  • “There’s plenty of shadowy, wormy supernatural goings-on in Stephen King’s new novel The Outsider. Yet the most unsettling stuff—that which will leave you uncomfortable when you sit and devour this first-rate read—probes the monstrous side of human nature.”

    — USA Today
  • “In his latest mystery-horror hybrid…you’re in for one hell of a ride.”

    — Washington Post
  • “An It for the Trump era.”

    — AV Club
  • “Narrator Will Patton turns this story into an audio blockbuster. Early on, Patton sounds like he’s reading a police procedural. He uses a terse, confident voice to portray Detective Ralph Anderson…When Holly Gibney, the troubled sidekick turned ace private investigator from Stephen King’s Bill Hodges Trilogy, enters the story, Patton gives her a halting speech pattern and falsetto voice. Holly’s unique sound and open-mindedness effectively contrast with the decent but sometimes hardheaded men surrounding her. King’s usual sprawling cast of characters is also present, and suffice it to say that Patton does them all justice. Winner of the AudioFile Earphones Award.”

    — AudioFile
  • “A juicy tale that plays at the forefront of our current phobias…[The Outsider] will remind readers of King’s early novel It.”

    — Kirkus Reviews
  • “What begins as a manhunt for an unlikely doppelgänger takes an uncanny turn into the supernatural. King’s skillful use of criminal forensics helps to ground his tale in a believable clinical reality where the horrors stand out in sharp relief.”

    — Publishers Weekly

" Good scary story about the bogie man from childhood. Bad guy is really bad and the good guys have to bond together to find a way to defeat him. As the story developed, it drew me into the mystery as well as the supernatural. "

" A really good book is one that I never want to end, and this one does this for me. Something that will kill the best audiobook is a narrator that just reads it as opposed to being a part of it. The tone of the voice matters. This narrator Will Patton is my new favorite, I love his voice. It reminds me of George Carlins voice. "
