One of the supreme masterpieces of world literature, the Homeric saga of the shipwrecks, wanderings, and homecoming of the master tactician Odysseus encompasses a virtual inventory of the themes and attitudes that have shaped Western culture. The tale of Odysseus' encounters with such obstacles as Calypso, Circe, Scylla and Charybdis, the Sirens, and the lotus-eaters, and his dramatic return to Ithaca and his patient wife, Penelope, forms a prototype for all subsequent Western epics. " I HATED THIS BOOK!!! It was so confusing, and I actually get Greek Mythology! And Shakespeare! And I couldn't understand this book at all. At all! "

" Just finished my 2nd reading of this (and 'The Iliad') for an A level exam and I've definitely decided that I'm an 'Odyssey person'. Whilst Iliad focuses on the death and destruction of warfare, I find the Odyssey somewhat heartwarming in that it's all about a man just trying to get home to his wife and kid (awww) and re-establish his position in his house. I've really grown to have a soft spot for emotional Odysseus and don't even mention Argos... Lattimore's translation is just about as vivid and epic as you can get. It's a little more complicated than the other translations apparently, since it's the closest you can get to the original. But incredibly useful for students like me :). "
