Hendrik Hertzberg was a New Yorker Talk of the Town reporter from 1969 to 1977 before moving to Washington, where he served as a speechwriter for President Jimmy Carter and as the editor of The New Republic. He returned to The New Yorker in 1992 as an editor and writer and is the principal contributor to the Comment section of the magazine. His book, Politics: Observations & Arguments, was recently published in paperback.
Donald Nichols is the director of the La Follette School of Public Affairs and professor of economics and public affairs at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He served on the staffs of the Council of Economic Advisers to the U.S. President in 1963 and the U.S. Senate Budget Committee in 1975 and 1976. He was U.S. Deputy Assistant Secretary of Labor from 1977 to 1979 and economic adviser to the governor of Wisconsin from 1983 to 1986.
