Allie Fox is going to re-create the world. Abominating the cops, crooks, junkies and scavengers of modern America, he abandons civilization and takes the family to live in the Honduran jungle. There his tortured, messianic genius keeps them alive, his hoarse tirades harrying them through a diseased and dirty Eden towards unimaginable darkness.

" Paul Theroux creates a convincing character in the madman that is Allie Fox and I really began to get annoyed by his arrogance as the story developed and he carried his family deeper and deeper into the jungle while he delved deeper and deeper into his own deranged mind. He creates such a dependency of his family on him that even as they want to break free from him and return to the world as they know it, he instills his hatred towards society in them and they feel they are unable to cope without him. " ..an interesting story of wanting to be away from North American society and doing it by going to live in the jungle in Honduras...sure the educational system is not what it should be in North America but is taking the kids up an unknown jungle river in a floating shack with no food or money much of an education?
