Allie Fox is going to re-create the world. Abominating the cops, crooks, junkies and scavengers of modern America, he abandons civilization and takes the family to live in the Honduran jungle. There his tortured, messianic genius keeps them alive, his hoarse tirades harrying them through a diseased and dirty Eden towards unimaginable darkness.

" Paul Theroux creates a convincing character in the madman that is Allie Fox and I really began to get annoyed by his arrogance as the story developed and he carried his family deeper and deeper into the jungle while he delved deeper and deeper into his own deranged mind. He creates such a dependency of his family on him that even as they want to break free from him and return to the world as they know it, he instills his hatred towards society in them and they feel they are unable to cope without him. "

" ..an interesting story of wanting to be away from North American society and doing it by going to live in the jungle in Honduras...sure the educational system is not what it should be in North America but is taking the kids up an unknown jungle river in a floating shack with no food or money much of an education? "

" Half Connecticut Yankee, half Ahab, Allie Fox is unpredictable and yet believable, sad and inspiring and mesmerizing and odious, and above all, unique. Theroux has created an absolutely fascinating character--and an equally fascinating group of characters to surround him. "

" I haven't read much of Theroux's fiction, but I was pleasantly surprised by this novel about the semi-crazed American Charlie Fox and his dream of conquering the Central American jungle. The movie didn't do it justice. But then, few ever do. "

" Very hard to read at times but the story of one many's pride, bad choices in relocating his family to Central America on a near whim (to build an ice factory in the jungle) make for good drama indeed. "

" The funny thing about this book is that I both really liked it and never want to read it again. Its cousin The Poisonwood Bible, on the other hand, I've read multiple times.

    Go know. "

" Not a bad read, but not the best travel book I've read lately. I really like the story, but the telling makes it hard to read. There is a sarcasm to the writing that one must be in the mood to imagine your most snarky friend speaking the words while reading. "

" I'm sure if I were to have some kind of degree in literature, I might find something truly interesting about this book. But since I read just for fun, I thought it was lame! "
