Publisher Description

After more than three decades of captivating epic fantasy readers, the storytelling magic of New York Times bestselling author Terry Brooks’s Shannara saga continues to enthrall. Now the fascinating chronicle of Shannara’s prehistory reaches a thrilling new peak in the sequel to Bearers of the Black Staff. For five hundred years, the survivors of the Great Wars lived peacefully in a valley sanctuary shielded by powerful magic from the blighted and dangerous outside world. But the enchanted barriers have crumbled, the borders have been breached by predators, and the threat of annihilation looms large once more. Sider Ament, bearer of the last black staff and its profound power, devoted his life to protecting the valley and its inhabitants—and, in his final moments, gave stewardship of the black staff to the young tracker Panterra Qu. Now the newly anointed Knight of the Word must take up the battle against evil wherever it threatens: from without, where an army of bloodthirsty trolls is massing for invasion; and from within, where the Elf king of Arborlon has been murdered, his daughter, Princess Phryne Amarantyne, stands accused, and a heinous conspiracy is poised to subjugate the kingdom. But even these will pale beside the most harrowing menace Panterra is destined to confront—a nameless, merciless figure who wanders the devastated land on a relentless mission: to claim the last black staff . . . and the life of he who wields it.

"I just love Terry Brooks. I have read all his books. Some I have liked more than others but all I enjoy. This particular book was enjoyable and a good read. I wanted more and felt it ended too abruptly. I was left wondering and wishing . He resolved the main issue but I wanted to know what happened with the characters . I am worried about them! And what's the deAl with the staff? Somewhere it's gonna disappear as. It does exist on other layer stories....well o suppose I will have to be patient and wait ...."

" The Measure of the Magic is the second book of 'Legends of Shannara'. It continues from where the Bearers of the Black Staff left off introducing a new antagonist. Bearers of the Black Staff had a great set up but unfortunately my expectations were to high for the The Measure of the Magic. Of course that doesn't mean it wasn't a good book. Most of the events that happened through out the book were just amazing and filled with emotion. Like 'Bearers of the Black Staff' The Measure of the Magic had a gripping build up towards the ending and again had me on the edge of my seat like Bearers of the Black Staff did but there were certain events that felt rushed or felt like they were made convenient for the main characters. Most of these events happened during the second part of the book. Personally this made the last couple of pages less exciting for me. Nonetheless it was still a good book but I would have enjoyed the book a lot more and definitely would have rated it higher if there was more depth on the Ragpicker and time for development of the magic some characters receive in the story. Though the Measure of the Magic felt rushed during some events it was still a good read and I recommend it to the people that enjoyed The Bearers of the Black Staff. "

" Started out ok. But got a bit repetitive. Dialog was a bit choppy and characters seemed to get out of character quite a bit. "

" Not too bad. Brooks work has evolved over the years - less from world building to more character building. Different feel for the overall Shannara series, but it was an alright read. "

" This second book in the Legends of Shannara duology is ok. I gave it three stars because it kept me engaged the entire time. If you're curious about Terry Brooks, then you may want to start off with his earlier work. "

" Hurray - there was no cliff hanger ending this time! I liked this better than some of his recent works. More interesting characters, more action, not quite so many long unending walks through dark gloomy places. "

" While Brooks tends to stick to the same formula and type of characters, the ones in this series were different. Just when I thought it was going to be the same story yet again, I was pleasantly surprised by the new tack. Refreshing. "

" I have enjoyed the Shannara series since the beginning. With a few dead spots along the way, this has been well thought, well written series and this current installment was no exception. The plot moved quikly and I bought into the characters. I look forward to the next (and possibly last) book? "

" Sort of a lazy ending. Came very quickly. Killing people seems like an easy way out and in one case seemed against the morals of the characters involved. I'll read whatever Brooks writes; been reading him since junior high. But hopefully the next series will not finish quite so lazily. "
