The Man in the Iron Mask continues the adventures of the dauntless heroes of The Three Musketeers - Aramis, Athos, Porthos and d'Artagnan. In old age their swashbuckling ought to have been replaced by a more gentle way of life, but the veteran warriors find themselves at the center of a plot in which both hearts and heads are broken, and the very throne of France is at stake. " I'm sure I'm missing a lot of things that make it an enduring classic. In general I found it to be a big yawn. "

" It was amazing. Dumas is by far my favorite classical author. I said the same thing after reading Hugo and Tolstoy, but I always come back to Dumas. "

" Not what I expected this book to be about. The man in the iron mask is of little consequence and only serves to ignite the events that lead to the demise of three of the four musketeers. I was so sad to read that Porthos died. And the way Athos passed was not fitting of his philosophy of life. Raoul is a fool to risk his life because of a broken heart, but true to Dumas, la valleriere gets her just desserts. D'artangan is the only one that dies in battle, after he has completed his task. And aramis, I would have never guessed he would commit treason, even if he thought it was the right thing to do. "

" Dumas is good at the type of books he writes. Count of Monte Cristo being his best. This one is good, but not amazing. Its long and dramatic. My copy from 1998 had Leonardo DiCaprio on it. And that was pretty much why I read it to begin with. "

" Starts out rousingly enough and features an excellent cast, but ends feeling a bit scattered and pointless. "

" It seems the author was tired of writing about these characters (to many books about them), so he came up with a fool proof solution...(spoiler) and kills them all off! "

" A great finish to the D'Artagnan series - definitely enjoyed it. Ending wasn't what I wanted though, you could tell he was just trying to permanently end the series. It could easily be having seen the movie made me want more drama. "

" I love Dumas. This book is a little different than the movie versions. They were definitely cavalier. If you want the romantic view - watch the movie. If you want the (probably) more truthful version of French soldiers, read the book. haha "

" Much different from the movie version. "
