Frances Hodgson Burnett published The Making of a Marchioness in 1901. She had written Little Lord Fauntleroy 15 years before and would write The Secret Garden in 10 years' time; it is these two books for which she is best known. Yet Marchioness was one of Nancy Mitford's favourite books, was considered 'the best novel Mrs Hodgson Burnett wrote' by Marghanita Laski, and is taught on a university course in America together with novels such as Pride and Prejudice, Jane Eyre, and Daisy Miller.

" I read this while I was sick in bed for a week. It was very charming. Similar to her other books (Little Princess, Little Lord Fauntleroy (sp?)), the main character was pure and innocent and good and it was very uplifting. "

" I didn't think I'd read this before, but as I read I realised that the story was familiar although it must be years and years since I read it and I probably enjoyed it more as a teenager. It's being adapted for television by ITV, although I suspect they may need to pad it out considerably. The book is short, sweet (perhaps too sweet?) but very readable. "

" 3.5 stars, would make a good BBC Sunday night drama. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Lesley Eirich | 1/17/2014

" Delightfully implausible romance with a heroine so good you want to slap her, but FHB pulls it off. I enjoyed it immensely. "

" Another one of the Persephone Books by Frances Hodgson Burnett. I think this is my favorite, as it is for adults not children. I really like her characters and this one has a bit of a surpise ending. "

" I liked the first half, but found the second part rather contrived. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Linda K K | 12/25/2013

" Enchanting read of a lady of meager means who rather magically captures the heart of a marquis. Although she is rather simple in mind and intellect, Emily is so very good at heart, that it made me feel happy to see her life change. "

  • 2 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 52 out of 5 Noel Palatas | 12/24/2013

" This book feels dated in ways that the two other books I have read by her do not. I enjoyed the first part of the story but I kept waiting for character development that never happened. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Sanya Weathers | 12/19/2013

" It starts as a great Victorian novel, an impression quickly shredded by the stupidest plot twist and the most anticlimactic ending on earth. "

" Loved this. From the author of The Secret Garden. About a woman who is not a go-getter, but who has to, and does, think about every move as she has no resources. Sounds dumb, but it's lovely! She's a wonderful character and the story is truly moving. Unusual. "

  • 3 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 53 out of 5 Kilian Metcalf | 9/20/2013

" Rather a mixed bag of romance and high Victorian psychological thriller. "

" A rather melodramatic period romance by the author of A Little Princess and The Secret Garden. I like her children's books better than her books for grown-ups, but this book kept my attention. "

" I enjoyed reading this story. It is a Cinderella type story set in the Victorian age. I read it in 1990, then I listened to the story again in 2007 on CD. I enjoyed it just as much as the first time. "

" I shouldn't have reread this book. It was so dated, and was interesting only in its portrayal of the aristocracy of the Victorian era. What a pathetic life the women led. Jane Austin remains as fresh as the day it was written, I cannot say the same of Frances Hodgson Burnett. "
