In the remote village of Mandryn, Tessia serves as assistant to her father, the village Healer - much to the frustration of her mother, who would rather she found a husband. Despite knowing that women aren't readily accepted by the Guild of Healers, Tessia is determined to follow in her father's footsteps. But her life is about to take a very unexpected turn. When treating a patient at the residence of the local magician, Lord Dakon, Tessia is forced to fight off the advances of a visiting Sachakan mage - and instinctively uses magic. She now finds herself facing an entirely different future as Lord Dakon's apprentice.

Although there are long hours of study and self-discipline, Tessia's new life also offers more opportunities than she had ever hoped for, and an exciting new world opens up to her. There are fine clothes and servants - and, she is delighted to learn - regular trips to the great city of Imardin. However, Tessia is about to discover that her magical gifts bring with them a great deal of responsibility. For a storm is approaching that threatens to tear her world apart.

" Well this the first book read as part of The Australian Women's Writers challenge. This book takes quite a while to get going. In fact, had I not have been reading this for the Australian Women writers challenge, I would have given up on this book after chapter one. I am glad that I kept reading. Since, although this book is not mind blowing or world changing, it is an enjoyable read. In addition, it does deal with issues such as; freedom, gender, and sexuality. It is well worth a read and I look forward to reading The Magicians Guild; the Black Magician. "

" I don't get the negative reviews that I saw before reading this book. If you are a fan of the Black Magician trilogy, then you most certainly will be a fan of this book. I like getting some background info on earlier events in Kyralian history. "

" Could have been brilliant but had some crippling problems. The plot line set in Sachaka is boring and causes the book to lag until it is roped into the main plot at the end. The final few chapters are terrible and disappointing - which sometimes happens with Trudi Canavan. "

" Really enjoyed this book. Good characters which you affiliated with, good story line of good v evil, religion/ beliefs causing war, feminism all supported through magic. A little slow in some parts but forgivable. Highly recommend. "

" I real;ly enjoyed her Black Magician series but I couldn't finish this. I felt that the book didn't have enough action. I found that after they got to the city and Canavan started describing shopping trips and parties I lost interest in what was happening. "
