Publisher Description

Set hundreds of years before the events of The Magicians’ Guild, THE MAGICIAN’S APPRENTICE is the new novel set in the world of Trudi Canavan’s Black Magician Trilogy.

In the remote village of Mandryn, Tessia serves as assistant to her father, the village Healer. Her mother would rather she found a husband. But her life is about to take a very unexpected turn.

When the advances of a visiting Sachakan mage get violent, Tessia unconsciously taps unknown reserves of magic to defend herself. Lord Dakon, the local magician, takes Tessia under his wing as an apprentice.

The long hours of study and self-discipline also offer more opportunities than she had ever hoped for, and an exciting new world opens up to her. There are fine clothes and servants - and, to Tessia’s delight - regular trips to the great city of Imardin.

But along with the excitement and privilege, Tessia is about to discover that her magical gifts bring with them a great deal of responsibility. For great danger looms on the horizon for Tessia and her world.

"This is a great book, probably the best of all of Canavan's books that I've read so far. Great all around, a fantastic read. (view spoiler)[One little problem I had with it was that while we had plenty of insight into why Jayan ended up falling in love with Tessia, there was less about how Tessia fell in love with him. First she dislikes him, then sort of comes to tolerate him, then they seem to be come friends, but we don't really get much of her viewpoint during it all, or at least not as much as we do for Jayan. However that's minor gripe which is eclipsed by the fact that they DID confess their love for each other! I nearly died when I thought Jayan was going to die before telling Tessia how he felt. " I love Trudi Canavan, my new favourite author. This book is marvelous. I couldn't put it down. "

" all the usual trappings of the high fantasy genre which I generally adore (neophyte female magician in a medieval-ish world - learning about the craft of magic while also bashing her way through the glass ceiling of stereotypes). Nice, predictable fare. A bit more political strategy in this than in other high fantasy, which is also appealing. Although the middle dragged a little bit, the pace picked up towards the end and the foreshadowing of events (since it is apparently a prequel to Canavan's other series) made me consider reading more about this world. Nothing ground-breaking, but hits the escapist, medieval-magical-fantasy world spot when you need it. "

" Haven't read any other Canavan. Found this a fun book to read. Kept me interested to the end. Great world, great characters, great action. What more can you ask for from a fantasy book? "

" A little slow paced and fragmented for my taste though it is still a very good story and holds its own compared to the prequel series. "

" I like the way it starts out. I just wish she keep with the story of the young female apprentice and add more to it from her point of view. "

" This is my first Trudi Canavan book and I was happy to learn that it's the prequel to the black magician trilogy which I haven't read yet and now I can read them all in sequence. It was a great read, a perfect start to my holiday, it was nice to read a stand alone book for once. I loved the characters and their relationships with each other and how they developed through the book, it did feel like a swift ending though. "

" I liked the character of Tessia. The book could have been written better. There are some scenes that are stretched too much whereas some to which more justice was needed. But overall it was worth reading. "

" I real;ly enjoyed her Black Magician series but I couldn't finish this. I felt that the book didn't have enough action. I found that after they got to the city and Canavan started describing shopping trips and parties I lost interest in what was happening. "

" As a roommate once said - It was long and full of words. The book started out interesting but began dragging about 1/2 way through and I felt like I was just wading. I'm all for reading longs books but sometimes I think it is difficult to keep the plot going with minimal dragging. "
