By universal critical and popular acclaim, Philip José Farmer's Riverworld novels form one of the most original, majestically conceived science-fiction works of all time. In this fourth entry in the saga, a great battle is brewing as extraordinary characters - including Samuel Clemens, U.S. Grant, and Cyrano de Bergerac - find themselves on the verge of discovering the origins of Riverworld.

Sir Richard Francis Burton and Clemens, who have traveled for more than 30 years on two great ships, are about to reach the end of the River. But there is a religion, The Church of the Second Chance, that has grown up along the River and its adherents, possibly inspired by aliens, are determined to destroy the riverboats. A coming battle may destroy Burton and Clemens, but even if they survive, how can they penetrate the alien tower of the Ethicals, who created this astonishing world? What can humans do against a race capable of creating a world and resurrecting the entire human race on it?

" Not as good as the others in the series. I felt it was less clear. "

" Still not crazy about this series, but I'll see it through to the end. "

" Like the series itself, each book becomes increasingly fascinating and frustrating at the same time. Most of the pertinant questions are answered, and once the tower is conquered this science fiction story finally includes some real science fiction content. But don't expect to be overly satisfied with how things work out, and don't expect Farmer's assurances that this is the conclusion to deliver either. I will probably read the next book, and I am not so sure I won't be reading it just to spite myself. "

" I didn't enjoy this book as much as the first three. But the series as a whole was good. "

" Parts of the book were exciting but parts were interminable and boring. I still like the characters, and the writer has such a vast imagination that you can't help but be swept up in it all, but over-all I feel the series is starting to run out of steam. "

A bit too wordy without saying enough... "

The two riverboats (long story) are going to have a big battle which takes forever to tell.

What can I say? I liked it enough to read it twice. "
