"Such a great story of redemption and redemptive love. Near the end, as the prince is giving his life for a princess who as yet does not even really care or understand his sacrifice, my 5 and 6 year old girls were in tears. It didn't take long for them to see Christ and the church in this." — Dan (4 out of 5 stars)

" What a delightful little story. :) Full of wit and charm and brevity, I quite enjoyed this light-hearted narrative. "
" This was a fun fairy tale and I wonder why it isn't better known. It is definitely not as good a read as the Princess and the Goblin but it isn't suppose to be. MacDonald is one of the great authors who are word crafters like Dickens and Austen. The concepts in the story are funny at times but at times serious and convey good morals. I certainly enjoyed it. "
" I'm going to get all newspaper critic here and say "delightfully charming." :) "
" This story answers the question what would happen if someone lost their gravity? I found the answer quite amusing. : ) "
" This was a sweet little story though it is pretty dated and I found the writing to be too affected for me to really connect with the characters or the plot. It was a fairy tale told in the style of an old fashioned lilting fable so though I found it to be clever I didn't find it to be especially engaging. "
" I don't always remember to add read-aloud books to my list, but I found this one to be exceptional. Loved the humor and wit...and of course, Maurice Sendak's lovely illustrations. "
" This was super cute. I love the older versions of fairy tales. Kids these days don't know what they're missing out on. You just don't find children's books written like this anymore. "
" now maurice sendak has made the pictures the light princess always deserved to have. wonderful as usual. "
" So beautiful, so sweet. A precious little fairy tale. "
" Liked the 2nd half. The prince's voice on the audiobook is amazing! "
" Cute little story about love and sacrifice. :) "
" a delightful fairy tale told with unusual 19th-century wit. i will retell this to my future children or to anyone in need of a good bedtime story. "
" Holds a tender place in my childhood. Were I ever to have children, I would read this to them. "
" This was adorable. Usually full cast audiobooks annoy me but this one didn't somehow. Highly recommended. Smart and sassy. "
" An interesting fairy tale. Enjoyable, an easy read. A boy falls in love with a Princess who has a very...interesting problem, and is willing to sacrifice his life to help her. "
" I had completely forgotten about this story until accidentally coming across it here. If you can find it, it's so very, very worth reading. "
" Has some really really big words so in that sense kids may need to be a little bit older to understand or have a parent willing to explain. But a cute story nonetheless. "
" A delightful children's tale with a message under the story. Satisfying and fun. "
" Full Cast Audio did a wonderful job with this story, and the prince was darling. Especially loved his songs. "
" Only slightly less great than The Golden Key. Again, make sure to get the edition with the Sendak illustrations. "
" a favorite from my childhood. I remember reading it when I was nine. It was tiny, and green, and the most romantic thing I'd read since "Runaway Bunny" when I was five. "
" I just read it again after a long time. It's a fun, really fast read that is just one of those classics that everyone should read. "
" It's short, so you may as well read the story instead of a review. I will say MacDonald has more of a sense of humor than I gave him credit for. "
" Cute. Very short. Great audiobook. Similar to Gail Carson Levine in story and style. This author uses a lot of 5 dollar words which made the listening all the more fun. Nothing special, just simple princely fun. "
" This was a really enjoyable book. I felt sorry for the prince and the princess frustrated me, but the book was very good. "
" Stacy introduced me to this little gem. Definitely, one of my favorite fairy tales. "
" Cute fairytale, almost parable-like story about the importance of gravity and falling when it comes to love and life. "
" This is a unique, fun fairy tale that can be read in one sitting. It's a little under 2 hours in audio format. "
" This is one that I will purchase when my daughter finds the joy of reading! "
George MacDonald (1824–1905), Scottish children’s author and novelist, was educated at Aberdeen University before training as a Congregational minister. Finding his own individualistic views unacceptable to his parish, he gradually turned to literature. He published over fifty volumes of fiction, verse, children’s stories, and sermons but is remembered chiefly for his fairy stories, including The Princess and the Goblin (1872) and its sequel The Princess and Curdie (1873).
