NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER

Perhaps the most influential sovereign England has ever known, Queen Elizabeth I remained an extremely private person throughout her reign, keeping her own counsel and sharing secrets with no one—not even her closest, most trusted advisers. Now, in this brilliantly researched, fascinating new book, acclaimed biographer Alison Weir shares provocative new interpretations and fresh insights on this enigmatic figure.

Against a lavish backdrop of pageantry and passion, intrigue and war, Weir dispels the myths surrounding Elizabeth I and examines the contradictions of her character. Elizabeth I loved the Earl of Leicester, but did she conspire to murder his wife? She called herself the Virgin Queen, but how chaste was she through dozens of liaisons? She never married—was her choice to remain single tied to the chilling fate of her mother, Anne Boleyn? An enthralling epic that is also an amazingly intimate portrait, The Life of Elizabeth I is a mesmerizing, stunning reading experience.

" I love reading history and Alison Weir is one of favorite authors. This is probably my favorite of all her histories that I have read so far. She has a way of holding the readers interest as if in story form. I recommend this book if you enjoy reading history, especially British and Tutor history. If you prefer historical fiction you would probably like the more recent novel Weir has written on this same subject - "The Lady Elizabeth." "

" I wish I could give this another half star. This is a good, engaging biography and Weir is an excellent storyteller. But all the endless plotting and drama and intrigue was a bit exhausting. "

" I was always interested in the life of Queen Elizabeth. I spent a lot of time reading about her growing up- I found many of her biographies, or even fictional stories about her were great. This written depiction of Queen Elizabeth was extremely well written. "

" Great book! I really like the depth and detail of the Queen's life in this book. The people she surrounded herself with and came in contact with on a daily basis is also great! Shattered a couple of illusions I had about her but that didn't stop me from enjoying reading about her life one whit. (I have always enjoyed reading about her and will continue to do so.) Consider the times...can't say more than that without spoiling it! Worth the read. "

" definitely a popular history book with only some discussion of historical uncertainty. alternates between very fun to read and rather slow to read. the problem is that Elizabeth just keeps going back to the marriage question ... and I'm not sure if the author just focuses on that too much or if it's an accurate representation of the circumstances. the question becomes tedious after a while, but fortunately lots of scandals pop up. also interesting information on Mary Queen of Scots. "

" Extremely detailed, very readable history...but does make you want to shout, "Get on with it Liz and either get married or tell the world you're not interested." She certainly was a master at stringing guys --even princes-- along. I seriously doubt that she was a "Virgin Queen." "

" An excellent history of the influential and intriguing Queen Elizabeth I. Weir strikes a nice balance between social and political history, and keeps things readable without falling into a novelistic narrative. Definitely recommended if you are interested in Elizabeth or the Tudors. "

" This was very well researched and written. I only gave it 3 stars because I got kind of bored. I don't know if Elizabeth got stale or if I felt like the book was stale...or if Elizabeth herself bothered me... Not sure. Well done, but not my favorite queen! "
