K. A. Nuzum - best-selling author of A Small White Scar, delivers clear, crisp prose that's reminiscent of John Steinbeck.

The Leanin' Dog tells the bittersweet tale of a girl with agoraphobia, a dog with claustrophobia, and the friendship that saves them both. Dessa really needs a friend. A friend with whom she can confide and share all the joys of Christmas. But with hope almost gone, Dessa hears a scratching sound that changes her life forever. Download and start listening now!

" After her mother dies in a snowstorm, young Dessa Dean, beset by flashbacks, must find the courage to leave the house again; thankfully, she has the help of a very special dog. What a beautiful story -- and the author certainly knows dogs! "

" Loved it! The kind of book a young girl would love to read. The dog was a stray, and the girl in the story saved the dog, and the dog then saved her! Beautiful! "

" This is a really sweet book and I enjoyed it a lot. Dessa Dean is terrified of open spaces since she witnessed her mother's death. It is only through fostering a friendship with a claustrophobic dog that she is able to start to get over her fears. There are really only 3 characters in this book Dessa Dean, her Dad, and the dog. There isn't a lot of dialog either. Even so the book is well paced and kept me interested. I highly recommend it. "

" First person. A tender girl/dog story about working through grief. The dog behavior details were authentic and endearing. Descriptive setting details and lots of sensory details. "

" I read this with Beth. It was very subject-heavy for a third grader, but still good. It is the story of a girl dealing with her feelings after the death of her mother and the dog that helps her through it. The ending is very uplifting and positive. "
