Laura Lippman has claimed all the major prizes in mystery writing and is a New York Times best-selling author. "The 7th in Laura Lippman's Tess Monaghan series and the best one yet since the first. Tess is such a terrific protagonist. Tough, flawed but totally likable. In this story she is asked to investigate a series of five seemingly unrelated homicides over the last 6 years only to find, with time and lots of wrong turns the common link. She hooks up with a retired Toll Cop, Carl, who is obsessed and flawed himself but an absolutely perfect partner for Tess in this story. The book is amazingly written and the plot terrific; multiple twists and turns and surprises. It's really cool how Lippman ties this story with the one in the first book of the series; closing a number of loose ends left hanging through the last 5 books. An excellent, excellent read but would not recommend if you have not read other books in the series. Particularly the first one.."

" if this is representative of the tess monaghan ouevre, i am very disappointed. i'll give the series one more try but that is all. such a shame considering how good "what the dead know" was. "

" Laura Lippman outdoes herself in this book. Another in the Tess Monaghan series, Laura creates a frightening serial killer who is stalking Tess. This roams all over Maryland and the surrounding countryside. We watch Tess go through a tremendous growth in this book as she works out the details in not one but five cases that tie together. Not everything works out as Tess would have liked, but that's the way it goes in real life as well. This book will make a believer out of you. "

" Really good addition to the series. A little gruesome in some details towards the end but really liked the mystery aspect and felt that it actually seemed plausable for Tess to be solving it and it seemed like it wasn't just her dumb luck for once! "

" Didn't have quite the slam-bang finish of other Lippman books I've read and I felt as though I should have read other Tess Monaghan stories before this one to really feel the impact of what the murderer did. Entertaining and quick read though and I'll definitely read more Tess books. "

" A darn good read with Tess following the clues fed to her by a serial killer. Just enough of the creepy killer's point of view to draw me on but not so much that it made my skin crawl. And not too much of Crow. Carl was a terrific multi-faceted character. "

" This was my least favorite of the Tess Monaghan books so far. There was far more darkness and violence in this one than the others. Perhaps I'm just a wimp and take things too much to heart but the end was very disturbing to me. "

" I am really enjoying this series - Tess Monaghan is a very interesting character. She's a private eye, based in Baltimore. In this book she deals with an Internet creep while also helping to solve a serial killing spree that started many years earlier. "
