Publisher Description

In the center of Luster towers an enormous tree that is the Heart of the World. Now the tree is wounded, pierced by a tunnel that connects it to Earth. Through that tunnel strides Beloved, the ancient enemy of the unicorns, followed by an army of Hunters eager to destroy every last unicorn. At the center of this great struggle is the human girl, Cara Diana Hunter, who sets out with her friend, the gryphon Medafil, to ask a dragon to aid the unicorns. As she travels, Cara meets not only the dragon, but a mysterious stranger who may hold the key to Luster's secrets.

As the threads of destiny weave about her, Cara will discover at last the truth about the unicorns - a truth that brings hard choices for everyone she loves as this magnificent, multi-stranded saga thunders to its astonishing conclusion.

"3.5-4 stars. It's finally over! Definitely the longest on-going series I've ever waited for. It was nice to see the conclusion of certain characters and to see where everyone ended up, though I wish there'd been a little more time at the end to really cover everyone's proper ending. The extremely short chapters that switched viewpoints every time were frustrating (starting from the last book) though I eventually got used to it--didn't like it, but got used to it. The Dimblethum's story was interesting and I liked how it all tied together. It kind of makes me want to go back and reread the first one, though I read it so many times I could probably recite it word for word."

" I loved The Unicorn Chronicles series and was sorry to have it end. Maybe that's why Coville took so long to complete all four books (1994-2010). When Natalie was in elementary school she brought home book one, "Into the Land of the Unicorns", and we were immediately hooked. The entire time I was reading the first book, I thought it would make a great Disney musical cartoon. It's a great fantasy series, including unicorns, dragons, centaurs, dwarves, wizards, geomancer, magic, other strange creatures, and a villanous woman and her Hunters. "

" Fairly entertaining although epic fantasy is clearly not this author's strength. The stuff with Fallon, Elihu and Allura was the weakest plot thread. Most of the secondary characters who died were underdeveloped, leaving the reader no real reason to grieve. The concept of slowly growing a new world is fascinating and the most intriguing idea of the book. "

" I was glad I read it, to finish the series, but it wasn't the same as the rest of the series. It was more... mystical, perhaps. At any rate, it was different enough to create a feeling of disorientation for me. "

" This is the final volume of the Unicorn Chronicles which took Coville several decades to write. He is pretty ambitious in this book, perhaps too ambitious but does get the sprawling book all tidied up at the end. Cara, her grandmother and the unicorns have to face their ancient enemy, Beloved, who is Cara's umpteen great grandmother and hates unicorns. How they and all creatures of Luster face Beloved is what this exciting book is about. "

" It lost a star because there are a lot of stories that were never started/finished. He left some loose ends maybe in hopes to create more. Well, it took him almost 20 YEARS to finish 4 books, I don't want any more loose ends. I want it over. It's not over. "
