" I read this before going to England and Scotland, great history. "

  • 5 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 55 out of 5 Robin | 11/23/2009

" A great read - and an wonderful excercise in critical history. A new look at the British Iles. This book is one of those rare books on the history of the peoples of the British Ilses that does not ooze propaganda. Very refreshing. "

" I learned a great deal about the history of the United Kingdom, especially about England, Wales, and Scotland. Davies is very detailed in his treatment and begins with prehistory, geography, and legends. "

" I've just started this one so I don't know enough about the book yet to offer an intelligent opinion. The four stars are obviously subject to change if the book turns out to suck. "

  • 4 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 54 out of 5 Bap | 3/20/2008

" This is a doorstopper of a book but it is very interesting. Davies argues that the United Kingdom is basically not a successful nation state and the with the advent of the EC it is likely that Scotland and Wales will split off from England, as the Irish have successfully done. "

" I suspect I might've given up on the print vdersion, as the material was quite dry in places, but Andrew Sachs' (Manuel from "Fawlty Towers") terrific narration pulled me through those points. "
