For Winfield Elliott, Viscount Stillwell, finding a prospective bride always seemed easy. Perhaps too easy. With three broken engagements to his name, Win is the subject of endless gossip. Yet his current mission is quite noble: to hire a company to repair his family's fire-damaged country house. Nothing disreputable in that - until the firm's representative turns out to be a very desirable widow.

Lady Miranda Garret expected a man of Win's reputation to be flirtatious, even charming. But the awkward truth is that she finds him thoroughly irresistible. While Miranda resides at Millworth to oversee the work, Win occupies her days, her dreams and soon, her bed. For the first time, the wicked Win has fallen in love. And what began as a scandalous proposition may yet become a very different proposal.

" The first book I've read of Ms Alexander and I really liked it. It was witty and different and kept me turning the page. I'm not usually a fan of stories set in this period - Victorian age - but really, apart from the mention of electricity and trains to London- it felt like a regency romance to me. I liked the story line - Win has almost married three times - and now his ancestral home has been badly damaged in a fire, he needs it rebuilt and who should he engage but Miranda - who pretends not to be the architect, but is. Not giving anything away there. There are lots of misunderstandings, lots of sexual tension, great banter and it was a very good read. I liked the three little stories at the end that explained his first three engagements. I'll def. read more by this author. I was glad to see at the front of the book that I have others I can get hold of. "

" Light hearted and witty, this was an engaging read. However, having read the previous story and novella in the Millworth Manor series I did find Winfield Elliott's stiff rumped act difficult to swallow as it didn't dovetail to the character VA had portrayed previously, especially in the novella (Lord Stillwell's Excellent Engagements). Read this for lots of funny moments, an interesting look at architecture as well as references to women's rights issues of the times. As remarked by another reviewer, VA has introduced us two more interesting characters - Miss Clara and Mr Chapman; let's hope we don't have to wait for too long to read more about them. "

" I liked it well enough until it devolved into the "I don't trust him/I don't trust her-- and yet I'm not actually going to TALK about my concerns with the person I supposedly love" bit, which was I find tiresome (particularly when the main characters are supposedly intelligent grownups). It WAS a nice ending, though, and the identity of Mr. Tempest completely threw me. The novella about his first three engagements was entertaining. "

" A delightful, light hearted romp through Victorian England. A romance where the female protagonist is not a twit. For those who enjoy Stephanie Laurens, Johanna Lindsay, and the like. "
