In a future world, vampires reign. Humans are blood cattle. And one girl will search for the key to save humanity.

Allison Sekemoto survives in the Fringe, the outermost circle of a vampire city. By day, she and her crew scavenge for food. By night, any one of them could be eaten.

Some days, all that drives Allie is her hatred of them. The vampires who keep humans as blood cattle. Until the night Allie herself is attacked - and given the ultimate choice. Die or become one of the monsters.

Faced with her own mortality, Allie becomes what she despises most. To survive, she must learn the rules of being immortal, including the most important: go long enough without human blood, and you will go mad.

Then Allie is forced to flee into the unknown, outside her city walls. There she joins a ragged band of humans who are seeking a legend - a possible cure to the disease that killed off most of humankind and created the rabids, the mindless creatures who threaten humans and vampires alike.

But it isn't easy to pass for human. Especially not around Zeke, who might see past the monster inside her. And Allie soon must decide what - and who - is worth dying for.

" Great book, disappointed with the ending. "

" I honestly thought that I was done with the whole vampire genre. That I'd read everything there was, and that everything I hadn't read were just variations over the same old basic theme. But then I read "The Immortal Rules". If course this novel does have some similarities with other books of the genre - how could it not? But at the same time, Julie Kagawa manages to give it a new spin. Allie was an awesome main character and leading lady, and in general this novel was just really well thought out, executed and written. Definitely recommendable! "

" Loved this book! It was definitely more than a typical vampire book. I am very impressed. "

" A gripping story about a Fringer (unregistered human) in a post-apocalyptic world run by vampires; the hook is that she gets turned almost immediately (not a spoiler--it's in the flap copy) but tries to stay human in her actions. What I most enjoyed about this book was NOT the teen romance, the sword-fighting, or the hunt for Eden (a humans-only city), but what I enjoy most about all vampire narratives: the part where the vampire passes as human. I love a passing narrative. What can I say. That said, I don't think I'll read the inevitable string of sequels. I got what I needed. "

" FABULOUS! MY FAVORITE AUTHOR HAS BLOWN ME AWAY AGAIN! Julie Kagawa wrote a captivating tale with incredible character development and a genuinely interesting storyline. To be honest, when I started this book, I was hesitant, and wasn't sure if Julie could keep up with the high expectations that came from the brilliant Iron Fey series. However, this story was amazing, and a breath of fresh air from the mundane and suffocatingly large collection of teen vamp novels already out there. A total MUST-READ! "
