Publisher Description

This is a love story of great beauty and great tenderness, the kind of love story that entangles the listener in the lives of the characters, so that after the story is over, one continues to live with those characters. And fortunately, the listener will not have to say farewell to these characters. The Immigrants is complete in itself, an absorbing novel of high adventure, romance, joy and tragedy. But it is also the first in a series that will tell the story of three Californian families over the course of the 20th century.

"This was a great saga of family, friends and love lost...and found. It begins with a French/Italian family arriving in New York looking for work and finding life to be difficult due to the lack of jobs even for those hard working men willing to do any honest job. Without money or decent shelter, the small family does their best to survive the their circumstances. Luckily, the search for work, and a better life, takes them to San Francisco; a place where hard work on the piers leads to a promise of a future until disaster strikes, not only for this family but everyone who lives in San Francisco. This disaster begins a story that will keep you interested in the characters and motivated to turn each page until the very end."

" Awesome work of historical fiction! This really is a generation-spanning saga that will hook you...before you know it you will be mired in the characters' plotlines...I was truly sad when I finished this book. I read the sequels, but none compares to the original, the gold standard. "

" The Immigrants is the first in a series of six books by Howard Fast. I first read these books in the early 80's and devoured them as fast as I could. If you like reading about the same characters throughout several books, following along the family lineage, all the while surrounded in colorful historical fiction, then this series is for you. Its pretty amazing that you can go through several generations of the same family! "

About Howard Fast

Howard Fast (1914–2003) was one of the most prolific American writers of the twentieth century. He was a bestselling author of more than eighty works of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and screenplays. The son of immigrants, he grew up in New York City and published his first novel upon finishing high school in 1933. In 1950, his refusal to provide the United States Congress with a list of possible Communist associates earned him a three-month prison sentence. During his incarceration, he wrote one of his best-known novels, Spartacus. Throughout his long career, he matched his commitment to championing social justice in his writing with a deft, lively storytelling style.
